Swapped out scope rings on the handi tonight
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:52:09 PM »
Was at walmart tonight pokin around and they had some Weaver Grand Slams on the rack ao i bought a set of the highs on a whim. Ive always gone with extra highs on a Handi because of the tall hammer but tonight i was looking and it looked like i could move the scope back enough that i could make a set of high rings work instead of the extra highs. Well it worked. I failed to get a pic but hope to sight in this weekend and will get pics then. Looks nice. I love having a scope sit low on a rifle.

Here is a before...

With the right scope and a little trimming off the tip of the hammer spur above the extension you can use low rings, just mounted a Leupold M8 4x compact(thanks to nitemann  ;)) in low Burris Zee rings(on Leupold rail) on my new 45-70 Talo Trapper. ;)

Now thats sweet!! I may play with this and see if i can fit mediums. Think the objective wont allow for any lower than that tho... But a 2-7x32 prostaff would be intriguing.

Here's a 50mm Simmons on a 280 Handi in medium Burris Signature Zees(.270" base to bottom of tube), objective size up to 50mm has never made any difference on a Handi for me because the chamber swell and base puts it well above the barrel, it's always the hammer that causes problems.  ;)

As usual, Tim is spot on, with Handi friendly scopes LO rings are the norm! I have quite a few H&Rs myself and almost all are scoped, I think two wear med rings, the rest haver LO!

Big objectives are not a huge problem, but with bull barrels may require med rings. Large variable adj knobs are the problem. as when coupled with the hammers on the H&R you need to go taller to get clearance.

The triming Tim is talking about is not awlays necessarry. Again of all mine maybe three have trimmed hammers. What we are talkning about is the 3/16" or so, that protrudes above the hammer spurr. (Once installed) You can grind or cut off with dremmel.

Leupolds, Nikons and many others fit just fine in LO rings.

I had a local machinist shorten, drill and tap my hammer. He did a superb job and even made me a custom knurled extension for it too.

Thanks, Dinny

It's easy to do yourself Joe, I've been drillin and tappin hammers for a long time, how do you think Dinny learned about it! You'd think it might be a secret but actually it's been in the FAQs for years!!  ;D Works on the old style M158 hammers too.  ;)
