S&W 22a Anyone have one? Do you recommend it?
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:48:51 AM »
I have been eyeballing a 22a with a bull barrel at my local gun shop.  I was curious how these stack up against the rugers? Are they good guns? Don't know anything about them.

I have one and for the money, they are a good pistol. Likely you will hear everything, both good and bad about them.... different strokes, different folks.   As far as accuracy, dependability... mine is as good as anything I have owned.  Now as far as looks, aftermarket parts and accessories..... Ruger is wayyyyyy ahead.  In my opinion, Smith 22A has the edge in price, but Ruger has the advantage in add-ons, trigger pull, and looks.Browning also makes a good 22 auto but is a bit more pricey. As far as others, Walther, Beretta, Sig Mosquito.... not my cup of tea.   You can look at RimfireCentral for some good info also.

I had stovepipe problems with mine when I tried bulk ammo, but when I went to CCI mini/mags and federal automatch, it's been 100% reliable. not a hiccup.
when I get a few hundred more rounds thru it, the other bulk stuff will probably work fine.
after about a 1000 rounds the trigger got much better, crisp and light.
accuracy?  I don't really know since I have a bad tremor and can't shoot any handgun very good.

I have the 22S, which is the same gun, built using stainless steel, not aluminum alloy.

Full target model is what I opted for, and it shoots just as accurately as My S&W model 41.
The trigger weight of pull is 3 lbs, versus 2 lbs on My model 41, which is insignificant.

Can't beat this gun for the price, all it's ducks are in a row, save one......there's a nylon recoil pad which needs replacement, usually after about 500 rounds fired.
Smith & Wesson has these in stock, and they are inexpensive, plus I recommend buying 2 or 3 dozen at one time, then You're stocked for a few years.

Buy it, enjoy it!
My gun is posted below:

Well,  I bought one... I figured with the price and the warranty I couldn't go wrong.  I love it!

I am sorry, but you should not have to replace the nylon buffer after only 500 rounds fired.  If this is the case the recoil/slide spring is extremely weak and needs to be replaced with a stronger one.  I had a 22a and put several thousand through it before I sold it without having to replace the buffer.  it did bend its shape a little bit, but once it took on this shape it never got any worse.  I know the new owner and he shoots it with no complaints either.
If it has a barrel and shoots bullets I am interested in it and if I don't have one I want one.  Never met a gun I didn't like.

Bought one several years ago and have found this to be a very dependable pistol.  Personally I prefer my Browning Buckmark but my wife likes the S&W better.  Hope you are happy with your purchase.

Oldhunter,
What type of ammo does your 22a like best?

Mine shoots like a champ.

S&W recommended CCI mini mags to me for this pistol.

I never owned one, but I have shot a bunch of them... I would not keep it if one was given to me... IMHO, the Ruger or Browning is a MUCH better choice...

Yes, sometimes the buffer pad lasts far longer than 500 rounds, other times not. Depends on what 22 ammunition is fired.
I bought a handful of those plastic pads, so I simply replace them after roughly 500 rounds fired.
This way, My gun is always in top, ready to go to range condition.
No complaints about the gun either, it's a dollar for dollar winner in My opinion.

I see this is an older post but I just want to comment.  I bought my first S&W 22A  5 1/2" yesterday, NIB for 219.00, I thought was an excellent deal.   I have not had a chance to shoot it yet but will very soon.  I've owned several Rugers and two Brownings, this gun is not either but for the money difference I'm happy.  The gun just feels good in my hand, I have big hands and the gun feels big.  It came with two mags and two extra nylon buffers, I've read many comments pro and con on the 22A but I like the looks and feel of this gun.  Thanks,

Joe

I just got some cci's and couldn't be happier.  After shooting the bulk remington stuff I was tempted to throw the gun in the garbage can.  The CCI's are where its at!  Love em

I just picked up a S&W 22S from a good fella. It has the 5.5" barrel and it shoots pretty good. I had to do some major cleaning of the gun and have some recoil spacers on order. I shot CCI standard rounds out of it and had no problems. Going to try it out on squirrel next fall and maybe add a red dot to it? This is my first S&W gun I have ever owned and so far everything doing well..... 8)

mine still won't shoot standard velocity, but maybe in a few more thousand rounds.
federal auto-match and cci mini-mags run perfect though.
