MZ5,

Your rifle was made in 1999, twelve years ago.  I'm talking about the more recent ones. Take a look at the ones made in the last 5 years.

Well, I stopped in at Cabela's this afternoon to return something I forgot I already had, and they had a brand-new BLR in 243.  I asked them to take it down for me and had a look at the gear inside.  Know what?  It's made of the same metal mine is.

So, I would still like to hear what makes you say the gears in BLRs are plastic, as the old BLRs you refer to (BTW, have you ever seen a made-in-Belgium BLR in the USA?) apparently had steel gears, and the newer Japanese ones have steel gears, too.  Help?

The old addage states, beware the man with one gun, he likely knows how to use it. But the lucky man has several, knows how to use them and chooses the one that fits the circumstances best. A Winchester 92 is a beutiful rifle, but likely outdated when hunting clearcuts. Caliber, reliability and consistency are choices made to suit terrain, distance and ability.
Besides, it gives reason to argue for another rifle!

Without a doubt, hands down the best deer riffle I"ve ever owned is the Browning A-bolt hunter, 300wsm with the nikon prostaff 4x12x40.  180 gn accubond loaded with 67 grains powder.  3 holes touching at 100 yds. Killed 4 deer since last year and all went straight down.  Didnt make a mess of them either.  Light to carry to.

Your combo sounds like elk medicine to me.  Mine is an old BBR in 25-06.  Still shoots accurately and is deadly on whitetails.  Sort of heavy to carry however.

The "best" deer rifle is the one you are most comfortable with and shoot most accurately.....PERIOD!

Have to agree with you Spanky. The old lever rifles in pistol cartridges or short range rifle chamberings are tried and proven, but hold no edge on the 06 in the east where thick brush may break to highlines or clearcuts. There is not much that this caliber can not do and do well. This seems to be proven by it's popularity. More of them are carried than any other caliber. Not that I am willing to give up my 94 or my 92.
