I like my XS7 243!
« on: December 25, 2011, 03:51:34 PM »
I read a lot of reviews looking for a 243 deer rifle.  Mossberg ATR sounded bad as did the Remington 770.  Savage Axis/Edge and Marlin XL7 XS7 had good reviews.  I picked up an camo stock Marlin XS7 for $324 from Buds.  http://lotsoffun.org/share/xs7.jpg The bolt is smooth, the trigger is very light and crisp.  The trigger is adjustable, but was set so well I don't want to touch it.  The stock is pretty, but is a very flimsy drastic plastic thing.  For the money I'm very pleased.  It is very accurate with plain 100gr Cor-Lok, Hi-Shok, and Power Point ammo.  Even with the pretty camo stock, if I get rich I'll get a Boyds thumb-hole stock for it just to make it solid and totally awesome sauce..:) http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Replacement-Stocks-for-Marlin-Rifles-s/124.htm?searching=Y&sort=9&cat=124&show=12&page=1&brand=MARLIN%20XS7  I guess my only down side is the stock being so plastic.  I'm 52yo and plastic stocks just don't feel right.  Other than that it's a great deer/varmint popper.

Joe,
I can't comment on the Marlin but the 243 is the right caliber.  If I only had one gun it would be a 243.  Good luck with your new Marlin.

I bought one used (barely) on another forum for my daughter.  It came with the Youth stock and a Boyd's laminated adult stock.  This thing shoots so good, I want to keep if for myself.  During sight-in (with the cheap package scope installed), I shot a 3-shot group with Remington Core-Lokt factory loads that was .770", and this was with the me creeping on the Youth stock  ;)

Looking for one for myself now so I can use that nice Boyd's stock.  My daughter is also watching me suspiciously to make sure she keeps hers  :o

Can any of you comment on the barrels that came with the rifles. On the bottom of the barrel are they stamped as a Remington barrel? I have read that some are made by the parent company and they are a much lower quality,

The bolt action Marlins are proving to be great shooters for real reasonable money. My local shop can't keep 'em in stock... they sell as fast as he can get 'em. Marlin must be doin' something right. :)

I bought a 25-06 Marlin XL7 shortly after they appeared in Houston, Tx market....so made in Marlin Conneticutt plant.  Several months ago I bought a Marlin XS Varmint heavy barrel in .308 Win made in the new Kentucky plant.  Happier with my first Marlin than my second one.  The Marlin varmit heavy barrel had disappointed me on its accuracy.  Was not as accurate as my first Marlin.  Much more copper fouling in the Kentucky Marlin rifle too and there was something about the lands and rifleings near muzzle I did not like.  Gave the rifle to a gent I use for gunsmithing and asked him to recrown the barrel.....truthfully, I tried something on factory crown that needed correcting.  When I gave rifle to gent for recrowning, explained my problem and mentioned I suspected the rifleings/lands had a problem.  Anyway, gent with rifle discovered his crowning tool not right for my Marlin heavy barrel and took rifle to another gunsmith ( a close friend of his and they help each other) to have him do the work.   Other gunsmith checked bore with his borescope and recommended about an inch of the barrel from the muzzle be removed, that the rifleings and lands had a problem.  This was something I suspected, since in a bright light and peering down the muzzle just right, I had noticed, but was not sure.

Since my barrel was something new for the XL/XS series, being a Varmit heavy barrel and rifle made in Kentucky plant, I have to question their quality control when it comes to bores.  Rest of rifle is OK, absolutely no problems and externally can't tell any difference between my first Marlin from Ct and one from Ky.
