« on: July 09, 2011, 10:32:45 AM »
I have a Marlin M60 and would like better iron sights to hunt with. Ths is my pickup gun and don't desire a scope. Tell me your set up and pics. Thank You!

I have a bunch of open sighted 22 rifles.
So far the sights on the CZ 452 are my favorite.
I find the Williams sights on the 10/22's to be strong and accurate.
A cool thing is the rear sight folds down for protection.
I just picked up a henry lever and the sights seem good on it.  Large and easy to see.

My Henry came with a Marble semi-buckhorn sight with an adjustable notch piece with 1/16"and 3/32" notches and a step elevator.
L/R adjustment is by drifting.
U/D can be adjusted by loosing the screw on the notch piece and sliding it up and down.
Using a dial caliper and some 8th grade geometry, I managed to sight mine in better than I can see.
The step elevator offers about a 4 MOA rise per step.

It's been interesting learning about the Marble's sights.
Requires a little more thought than a scope.
Probably going to put a taller front sight on the Henry to get the rear on the first step of the elevator, otherwise its just floating out there without reference to the other steps.

Marble's website offers great application information.

Folding sights are great if you will use a scope and want to mount it low.
I switch between scope and open sights (removing the scope) on my 10/22 and 1-RSI, so it is convienent.

some of the model 60 sights were kinda coarse and chintzy.you will always do well by upgradeing to a better quality sight set such as the marbles.getting the correct height on both sights is difficult and a must for accurate shooting.but actually what i like to do with a rifle that has coarse sights is to sight it in for a 6 oclock hold like you would a pistol.at 25 yrds sight it in so that with the front sight centered and leveled in the back sight the target, say a rodents head, is perched tightly on top of the front sight, where yu can see it.hold steady and squeeeeze!

No experience with these, but I saw them yesterday and thought they were kind of cool:

Says its for young or inexperienced shooters, but it looks like an itron sight equivalvent of a red dot.

I'm a big fan of peep sights.  at rimfire range they're almost as accurate as a low power scope.
to me, scopes only look good on bench guns.

Thanks to everyone I'm leaning towards Williams WGRS or Tech sights need to save some money first I like other options to. I use a 6 oclock hold with iron sights to many years shooting handguns.

I've been a big fan of Fiber-Optic sights for hunting, since they were first introduced.

They're currently made/available from Williams (FireSight), Hi-Viz, & Tru-Glo, and work equally well with either an FO rear open sight or a peep sight.

My new Marlin 60SB came with nice sights from the factory.  It appears to be a Marbles folding semi buckhorn and a blaze orange plastic front sight.  The front sight has a nice ramp that the plastic sight fits into.  It also has a slotted hood.  Presents a great sight picture and after adjusting the rear sight up 4 notches it's on the money.

I love peep sights on every rifle great for target and hunting.  I replaced the sights on my 39a with xs sights and its perfect now.  i wish all hunting rifles came with these.  I tried marbles on it first and they were much too fine for me.

I've been looking pretty hard at the Skinner barrel mount sight.  Thinking of throwing one of the Handi-rifle ones on my classic carbine, but had originally looked at the barrel mount as well.  ;)  I have the WGRS on my Buffalo Classic and they aren't bad, but I really don't like the adjustment too much.  Very hard to make small tweaks.  I'm thinking the twisting style adjustment w/ lock screw on the Skinner might be better.  ;)  Good luck deciding though.

For hunting and for target shooting I have come to rely on "peep" sights, either receiver mounted or tang mounted.  I have used them on rifles chambered in cartridges from 22 to 45-70 and am considering how to install them on my 50-70 Trapdoor.  For hunting, I unscrew the aperture to give me a larger hole to look through.  It effects the accuracy but not as much as you would think.

I just filed the front sight to a point then painted the bare metal. It's good enough for head shooting squirrel on my old glenfield 60.

I know I abreviated your quote some but I wanted to second this sight.  I actually squirrel hunt some with my polymer stocked 10-22 with the Factory sight on it.
