Advice on Model 83 probem
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:04:23 PM »
I picked up a Model 83 in 44 Mag a little while ago and discovered a small issue with it that I need some advice on.  After shooting it, I noticed that the hammer pin was sticking out a little.  Looking closer, I could push the pin to either side quite a distance.  In fact, I was able to push the pin far enough to the left to discover that the previous owner or someone has apparently had the gun apart and put the pin in backwards and put the spring tipped retaining screw in the wrong hole.  In other words, the groove in the pin is opposite the loading gate and the spring tipped pin is also in the corresponding hole opposite the loading gate.  I was wondering if I could use a punch the same diameter as the pin and follow the pin thru the hole, turn the pin around, then put it back in the right way with the screw in the right hole to hold the pin in place.  What do you think?  Also, would I need to let the spring tension off the hammer first?  I'm used to the Ruger with the coil spring capture tactic but not sure how to proceed with the flat spring in the FA.  Any advice would be very welcome.  I haven't seen any detailed instructions on taking a FA apart and reassembly like there is for Rugers.  Is there something like that available?  Thanks.

I'm sure someone on the board will have an answer, but why not get it straight from the horse's mouth.

Call Freedom Arms 307-883-2468 and ask for John.  He is a super nice guy and will talk you thru the fix.

Just to update everyone, I did speak to John and he said that using a punch to replace the hammer pin while turning it around would work fine.  Thanks again, Paul.
