fire cracker cannon
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:36:22 PM »
So to start with I did not know what a fire cracker cannon was until I started reading here in the forum.  After some looking and reading some of the google pattens I decided this is one of the few things I could safely build in my limited shop.

Looking around I found a scrap tube that had a nice flare to it and about a 5/16 bore.  I also found a piece of large stock about 1" steal plate that was torch cut and had about a 45 degree angle to it.  I decided the it would add sufficient weight to the breach and give the little gun the mas to tame the wild loads of a black cat style fire cracker.

I decided a breach loading design would be nice and figured the easiest would be have the whole barrel and face plate slide on the breach.

I added a face plate and welded the barrel the basic idea is the plate moves and the barrel raise up to open the breach.

I ended up using Conastoga Cannon Inc. wheels.  This thing works really well.

The pictures were timing out my connection so I figures I would need to add a little explanation after.  I welded the breach block to some 1" steel stock and welded a small tube for an axle.  The trail also acts as a guide to keep the barrel block in line as it slides up.  I would guess this little cannon weighs in at around 2 lb.

First time I saw your attachments, I groaned-oh no, not another bubba build.  Not so-no bubba build at all!  Very clever build for sure!  Great job!!

Try bottle rockets if you can get them.

If you post some pictures of the gun you should get a kewpie.

Here you go Smoke and fire will have to wait as its not polite to do right now.

I think I may have lost this one as the wife has placed dibs on it.

My inspiration was part Long Cecil and WWI Howitzer. I guess I can see the bubba build but glad you approve DoubleD.

When you started I though bubba.  The finished product is not bubba that is for sure!!!

Clever keeps coming to mind.  Clever design, clever use of  tools....and it looks goods also.

The fellows who want to build their own cannons and who don't have the tools or skills to machine of their own should take heart to this project..

Cool side effect was it got alot of the shop cleaned up.  Used up a bunch of "usable junk" that was laying around.  Those little pieces of steel that are too big to throw away but not quite big enough to use.  Thanks for the complements guys.

Also was able to use the cannon tonight.  Have a problem with big ole Texas Eagles roosting near the house.  Those things eat horrible things so you can just imagine what happens after they eat.  Well the little firecracker ran them off in about 4 shots.

;D Great! A useful tool, besides a neat project! There are current, everyday uses for cannons, they are helpful in going about our daily lives! An "Eagle Poop Prevention Tool"...an unintended side consequence/benefit...BoomLover
