243 115gr DTAC
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:43:29 PM »
i was on 6mmBR.com and saw a posting regarding a load firing a 115gr DTAC @ 3150fps, no mention of barrel length or load data. i was wondering how this is possible or if i'd be able to come close with my  factory vangaurd. the highest velocity i've found in a reloading manual is 3000fps with a 105 hornady Amax

Before you get into sheer speed, will a 1:10 twist barrel even stabilize a 115 DTAC.
I really doubt it.
I get marginal stability numbers when I calculate it using Brian Lizt's formula in a 10 twist.
Since I shoot 6mm BR I would likely bet that whoever posted there has a 1:8 or faster barrel.

Don't see how 3000 fps will do you any good if it ain't going straight.

However, saying that, remember that every barrel is different and I have no experience with Weatherby and the freebore it has.

Perhaps you can post the question on a Weatherby forum and get someone who has actually tried it.

Your vanguard won't stabilize the DTAC and even if it did you couldn't get that kind of velocity.  That bullet should be shot out of a 1-7.5 inch twist not a 1-10.  Those kind of velocties from a 243 is only achieved with a long barrel that is specially throated for the DTAC and loaded to a OAL of more than 2.8 inches.  You have to build a gun for that bullet.

i hadn't considered a specially chambered rifle. i assumed a longer barrel. my vangaurd shoots 105 Amax great @ 3025fps, but my question had more to do with curiousity. not a speed addict but love accuracy (was it Elmer Kieth who said "only accurate rifles are interesting"?) i used to use a 75gr hp at 3100 fps exclusivly. my 243 is only a varmit gun. but my fiancee and son will be using it and or my 6.5 swed for deer next season.

I think Townsend Whelen said "only accurate rifles are interesting".   Are you intending to use the A-max for deer??
They might work well, I don't have no first hand knowledge, but I'd bet there are better bullets for the deer.

No i use a 338win mag or 300 weatherby for deer, (Alberta muleys are huge!!! kidding but believe using "more than enough gun") i use the 243 for coyotes. typically 75gr HP but i get bored and either have to try new loads or trade the gun. i have used the Amax 105gr @ 2875fps for dogs with great success. if i hit em dead dog DRT!
