Freedom Arms 97 44 special
« on: December 25, 2011, 06:25:09 AM »
My terrific wife has ordered me an FA 44 special for Christmas!  It will be 5.5" with black micarta grips.  Ordered several weeks ago and should be here in a month or so.  I'm fired up about this revolver!  I'll use it for range fun and woods walking but it will definitely go deer hunting too.  I plan to hand load all the ammo for this revolver.  I would love to hear about your favorite bullets and loads.  Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I can't comment on the 44, but I can tell you that you will judging by my experience with the 97 in 45 Colt, you will find it very accurate.   Using it to hunt with will be a pleasure indeed.  However, be sure to post the successful hunt picture of you, your deer ( or whatever else you get) and the 97, so we can enjoy it vicariously as well.   Good luck!

I'm envious, I'd love to have an M97 in 44 Special and these days if I could afford one it would have a 5.5" as yours is. But I really can't afford one so my Ruger Bisley 44 Special with 5.5" barrel will have to do me and I'd read reports of yours and those of others who can afford them.

If only I had been born rich instead of so good looking.  ;D

Here's an old thread on the FA97 .44 Special.  You should find it interesting.

HGunner

Looks like we have a few things in common....

My wife bought the same gun for me for my 50th B-day 2 years ago. You will NOT be disappointed.

May just be the PERFECT "take along" gun! I have taken some deer with a 44 special, but not yet with this gun. I am getting ready to go right now and take a little woods walk. Guess what gun will be on my hip? ;D

That's great to hear BigMuddy!  Your loading tips for the FA 454 were very helpful.  IMR 4227 and the RCBS 300 gr SWCGC have become staples for my 454. If you discover some loading sweet spots for the FA 44 special please let me know!  Thanks!

My FA 97 44 special is here!  I made a short trip to the range yesterday and was surprised by how nicely it handled -- really light and handy.  It's one of the best handling revolvers I've ever shot.  I'm looking forward to playing with various loads.  The heaviest I've shot so far is 240 XTP over 18.5 grains of H-110.  It handles recoil surprisingly well for its weight.  As many suggested it shoots the Skeeter load great.  I do find the light weight makes it a little harder to hold steady offhand as compared to the FA 83 but after shooting the 97 for a while the 83 feels downright heavy. I'm afraid this little gun is going to spoil me!
