Good accuracy loads for the Rem. 700 ADL in .308?
« on: February 16, 2012, 10:41:02 AM »

I have had my Remington 700 ADL in .308 to the range and hand load for it.  Because it is so new I have started with some factory ammo, and bought a box of Sierra 150 gr. spitzer boat tails because it was cheaper than the Match king that I really prefer in my .270 and 30-06 as this gun is undergoing a break in period.  I have been using IMR 4895 powder.

I had to learn the hard way with my Mossberg 4X4 in .270 that the 130 grain bullets shoot best out to 300 yards as this is what the rifling was programmed for, the designers must have known that this gun was intended for deer hunters, I suspect that with the low end ADL (SPS) this will be the same.  I was looking at getting the Sierra Match king bullets next, I am partial to the 168 gr. but the military people like the 175 grain, I am also looking at something with less recoil.

The preferred powder that I hear people really like with .308 is Varget, should I stick with 4895 for my .308 and .270?  Or can I use Varget for both?  What would be the recommended bullet for the 700 with the rifling in it?

Thanks.

Light recoiling loads in the .308 Winchester
My load in a Remington 700 .308 with a Hart barrel and MPI stock,   46 grains of H380 with a 165 grain Sierra, Federal Primer,
Group size .350 inch at 100 yards.   CUP with this load just over 45,000  velocity 2610
For a small ring 98 Mauser with a Remington Barrel fitted.
51 grains of H380 with a 130 grain Speer for less recoil, groups well under 3/4 inch.   CUP with this load 47550, velocity 2915
50 grains of H380 with a 150 grain Speer groups again under 3/4 inch.  Cup with this load just over 50,000, velocity 2828
These loads are under maximum some several grains of powder under.  These are safe loads so don't someone get their panties in a wad over load data being posted.
The two Speer loads above in a 98 large ring Mauser with a Shaw barrel group  in the 1/2 inch range.
I have always found ball powder to be good for  accurate loads in the .243, 6 m/m and .308 rounds as it measures more consistently through a powder measure.

Varget will get all that a 308 is capable of with full case loads. a lot of the f-class shooters like the varget and 168/175 match bullets.
for less recoil youre on your own there, more speed =more recoil.  unless youre trying for the 1000yard targets and need to keep the bullet supersonic to the target, start loads will help some with the recoil and still be good to the 800 yard targets. and beat you up a little less.

Remington says that gun has a 1-10 twist, 180's should stabilize, if they dont try a little more powder velocity can help stabilize bullets in marginal twist barrels

varget isnt gonna make the 3000fps mark in a 270, its a little fast for top velocity. same for 4895,
look for something slower for a 270.
for 270 WIN.  h4831 or H4350 are good  theres a classic load of 4831 and 130 grain bullets  that makes the magic 3k fps that the cartridges reputation was built on. its a top load, work up to it slowly. theyre online at hodgsons site.

Depends on what ya wanna shoot,
H4895 will work good for the 150-155 an lighter
But I think the Varget is a better choice for the 165's and up. The stuff works great for 165 SGK and 168SMK's in my Handi 1-10 twist

168 gr BTHP match over 39.5 gr of IMR3031.
