Best factory 22-250 ammo
« on: January 27, 2012, 02:31:36 PM »
Well I just took the plunge today on a Remington 700 Varmint in 22-250 , this is the first on I've ever owned and being a very big fan of Remington $545 with the cheapo scope seemed like a decent price but Im not sure. I put a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40mm mil-dot scope on her. Since I havent got any dies to fit this gun yet I was wondering what kind of factoy ammo shoots good in these guns. Thanks

Every gun is different, try different ammo and you will find out what your rifle likes. That being said I like Nosler ballistic Tips and Hornady Vmax.Every rifle I've tried them in shot them well.
XLI the one to go with.

I'll give another thumbs up on the Winchester White box ammo.  I have a 3 shot group from a one of my Howa's at 205 yd that is a nice triangle.  A penny placed in the middle touches all 3 holes.  Good rifle + good ammo = that kind of a group.  DP

Range report time ;D  I took it out today and tried it out. Even being  the first few shots out of this rifle after 5 shots with the winchester white box to get it zeroed in it shot moa groups within 10 shots. I couldent belive that this gun was so accurate and hopefully after a hundred rounds or so it will tighten up even more. As for the hornady v-max ammo they shot around 3 to 4 inches higher I guess due to a faster velocity but also very impressive results. Thanks guys for your information.

Each gun is gonna have its own likes and dislikes ammo wise. I've used only three factory loads in my Remington 700 SPS Varmint .22-250. The first was a really old box of Remington 50 grain I had bought long ago to test a gun to see if I wanted to buy it. That gun hated it or maybe was just a junker. My Remington shot it under a half inch at 100 yards. Wish I'd bought 50 boxes of it back then.

The other two are both Hornady using their 50 grain V-Max. I have used both the moly coated and uncoated ammo. Hey I dunno how I ended up with moly coated rounds but they do shoot better in my rifle than the uncoated ones. I bought a bunch and Hornady shipped me a bunch for the prairie dog shoots we held out in OK for the H&R bunch here at GBO. I don't know which was which really.

Both shoot nicely in my rifle but that moly coated stuff for some reason is almost a match for the Remington ammo I tried. I doubt I'll buy anymore factory ammo for it as it will likely be fed mostly reloads in the future.

I've had great accuracy with the Winchester white box 45grhp, which I shoot in my .22-250 Ackley for grins/fireforming brass. It will flat out make a cottontail disappear in small chunks! Jack rabbits make a "red mist" out the other side! ha. I have shot other 22-250's all were accurate with just about everything I tried. I used a friends ruger #1 varminter and his handloads with the 52gr ?sierra match bullet on crows back in the early '80s. Just awesome! Really made the feathers fly! Can't do that now, they are protected, not sure if they weren't even back then, ha. Country boys can "find something" to shoot, can't they? Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info guys , another thing about this rifle is the trigger. I believe that Im going to leave it the way it is the X mark triggers are one of the best out of the box weight and there is no creep at all with them. Im very satisfied with the product
