Lyman Great Plains Hunter
« on: January 19, 2004, 02:45:19 AM »
I own a .50 caliber Lyman Great Plains Rifle with the 1:60 twist and it is an excellent round ball shooter.   8)  I was thinking of purchasing a 1:32 twist barrel for an upcoming elk hunt.

How many of you own a Lyman Great Plains with the fast twist barrel?  What kind of groups are you getting and with what load?  I'm just wondering if the Lyman handles "bullets" as well as it does round balls.

Thanks in advance....

X-Caliber,

Sorry I can't be of much help to you on this, but I have a similar question that maybe you can answer.

Have you ever tried a Maxi ball or Lyman's Plains bullet in the 1:60" barrel?  What were your results?  I'd be interested to know, as I also have a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in 50 cal, 1:60".  Please see my most recent post, LGPR: Can you shoot a Maxi?  I'd like to know your experiences, as I am in the process of putting my weapon together.

Looks like we are after the same information.

Thanks,

Matthew

I have shot Thompsom Maxi's and have found that with 70 gr 3f Goex, I can keep them within 3 to 4 inches at 100yds.  I prefer the round ball, but carry some Maxi's for quick follow up shots - never needed one though.

I bought the hunter barrel for my GPR a few weeks ago. They had them  at Mid-south Shooters Supply for $125. They are a drop in, no trouble. I thought it was a very good buy. You might want to check them out.
