I find it interesting that the founders wanted to put property instead of "pursuit of happiness" . I have been told that many european countries do not allow property tax, since I have not personally been there I cannot say. The land where I now sit has been in my family since about 1875. I built the house I am in. I dont mean as general contractor or etc, I mean I personally drove the nails.
I paid income tax on all the money I earned and spent on my house. I paid sales tax on all the supplies that I used to build my house. Now the government sends me a bill every year to be able to stay here. If I do not pay, after 3 years they will sell it to someone else. If I did not vacate when they told me to, they would send armed men to remove me. If I resisted they would employ force as necessary up to and including killing me to effect my removal. I do not find that either thrilling, magnanamous, reasonable, or indicative of liberty or justice. Since I am not particularly happy about that, I suppose I will be seen as anti-government. I have and will continue to pay my tax, because I love my home. There is no question that the government could and would remove me, that is simply the way things are. They cannot however run about and pretend to be just, equitable, or supportive of liberty while doing it.
I think that perhaps the only people truly free are people like Nelson Mandela, or the Dali Lama, or some monks somewhere. As long as you have something external that you value you will always have strings attached. I guess it is the price of being human. We are all in the game, figure out the rules, run your cost-benefit analysis, pay your quarter and take your chances. We only get to play one hand so make the most of it.
