Hand-Made obsolete magazines??
« on: January 21, 2012, 04:41:52 PM »
To all you talented gunsmiths out there..  magazines are basically sheetmetal and springs and I find it hard to belive that there isn't someone who has "made his own".  Is it really that difficult of a job to do?  I realize some detailed info would be needed and maybe a sample magazine would help, along with some trial & error time.  To someone wanting a great part-time job it seems a natural.   How crazy am I?

I am a machinist with considerable sheetmetal experience.. My opinion is that most obsolete magazines could be replicated in a small shop.. I could do it but it wouldnt pay very well to build one would take hours, perhaps a whole day ..What would somebody be willing to pay? Collectors arent keen on non-original parts..........And if making such a thing would almost need the gun in hand to check function of the completed mag...copying an old mag that may be worn and finicky might turn out bad for all parties..Yeah I think it may be a crazy idea.

I own a fab shop.
Mags are entirely doable.
If you want to pay ~$350.00- $400.00 for one.
My shop rates for similar items is $100.00 per hour.

Don a friend of mine had a 22 rifle with a 10 round mag. that stuck down like a 3rd. leg and he hated it, we could get another 10 rounder but not a flush mag as the co. that made the rifle had quite making them and his was serial # 1 we got another 10 rounder and I scribed it where it was to be flish, a friend of mine a tool maker took it cut it off folded the metal so as to be able to slide the base plate back on and of course cut the spring, his words exactly were it would cost more to do it again than the mag was worth.   Jim

I've seen Brno 465 magazines go for arouns $300+.......and when I look around there are a few of these fantastic rifles missing magazines. It would almost be worth making a form tool/punch to do the indentations then a mould to form it around.......and I bet there are a few more older rifles that are hard to get magazines for.........Kiwi
