Molly Stark Cannon: Can you separate fact from fiction?
« on: February 14, 2012, 07:06:19 AM »
Here's a link to an article with much more fiction than fact.  But the folks involved really didn't have anything solid to go on so they apparently make much of it up.
There's some info on how they used to fire their bronze 4-pounder (?) gun on holidays, with 3 lbs. of powder, and lots of wet paper and grass.  Please ignore all of that and never try it at home.  I'm quite surprised they didn't blow it up and kill the entire crew!  No wonder the gun recoiled 20 feet+  with a BLANK load!
I posted this mainly because much of the bogus stuff in it is so obvious that this is a good lesson in "critical reading" dealing with antique artillery.  Most of the "historical"info they give on the cannon seems to have no basis in fact and would be impossible to prove.
Sorry if this has been posted here before, I couldn't tell.
