Chambering a Sportster HMR to 17 Hornet???
« on: February 01, 2012, 04:52:36 AM »
Thoughts on chambering a Sportster HMR to 17 Hornet???

I have been in the market for awhile for a couple of .22 Hornet barrels... I have not had much luck... I was about to pull the trigger on two new .22 Hornets, when a thought occured to me... "Why not buy two new Sportster HMR's and spend the money saved upfront on rechambering to 17 Hornet... then fit the barrels to one of my SB2 frames?

Your thoughts on fitting the Sportster heavy barrel to an SB2 frame or on chambering from HMR to 17 Hornet???

I have never looked at an H&R rimfire Handi.  Is the barrel bore offset or is this done with the f-pin positioning?  I guess my question is will the bore of a handi rimfire barrel be lined up with the f-pin placement on an SB2?

Okay, so the offset on the rimfire handi is in the rimfire receiver.

If  wanted to take a H&R 17 HMR barrel and ream it to a 17 Rem do you think it would be more pressure than the 17 HMR barrel could stand ? Does HR use the same blank to produce all their barrels, thus the same strenght?

Modern H&R rimfire(including the .17s) and shotgun barrels are 1137 mild steel, centerfire rifle barrels are 4140 alloy, stainless are 400 series with magnetic properties, confirmed by H&R R&D in 2008.

If that is the case... what are your opinions about the 1137 steel handling the pressures of the 17 Hornet round... also have not heard conclusively on fitment of the HMR barrel to an SB2 frame... will give it a try tonight and post.

Tom, do a search on salt bath nitride for gun barrels. In a barrel, it actually outlasts chrome. The barrel has to be broken in first and the blue stripped. As a side note, it will also stress relieve the barrel. Larry Trotter has a 17 Remington and it shoots well. I have a 17 Fireball that he chambered and it shoots well. When the 17 HH is broken in, both the barrels are going off for nitride treatment, and they will out last the gun. If the barrel is polished, it will look like a high polish blue job.

Pressure isn't an issue, throat life is the only real concern that's been discussed before, so far no one has shot enough to report about it tho. Fitting to an SB2 frame is just like any other second hand barrel, will work fine if fitted properly, lots of rimfire barrels have been used for centerfire rechambers over the years here.

Fair enough... I'm going to do it... I already have the two HMR's sitting at home... I like them as HMR's but also have Savage HMR's... so I don't mind converting these two to Hornets... I don't mind being the guinnea pig who tests 1000 rounds through a 17 Hornet/former HMR barrel...  ;D

I dunno, don't think I ever asked, I didn't find the answer in the over 300 emails from H&R(Thunderbird has a great search feature!), but I suspect 1137, they were made by Marlin, finished by H&R, Brian might know.  ;)

Just curious because from what I have read, the operating pressure of a MZ can be double that of a 12 or 20 ga shotgun.

Even at double the pressure, you're still under 30kpsi, low pressure by modern standards, 4140 would wear better over time, but 1137 strength isn't that much less.
