Cleaning Dies
« on: February 24, 2012, 06:02:53 AM »
I just got a set of 50-140 dies that the previous owner used to reload for his BPCR.   ;D   How do I clean them up for storage until my 50-140 Handi Rifle appears?   ;)  Hot soapy water?   ???

Hi Richard, what kind of crud is on them that they need cleaning?
I always thought this was a "light coat of oil" type storage procedure.
I had a rough 45 colt die, took about a 5/16 bolt, cut the head off , cut a slot in it , folded a piece of 600 grit and stuck it in the slot, used it as an "el cheapo" hone to smooth it up.
Worked great.
Best wishes,
 :)

Mostly just black gunk in all the knurled or threaded places.  I 'spose it's just powder residue.   :-\

Guess I'll just clean them with hot soapy water the treat 'em like any other die set.   ;)

??? Not real sure how somebody could get powder residue on their dies?
Think I'ld use something like a regular gun/bore solvent, that stuff has got to be grease or such.

Ultrasonic cleaner with Simple Green in it. Then rinse with hot water, blow dry, and oil lightly.

Well, if youse was needing some normal dies, I could just send you up a set...but you got all them cannons now.  Remember shoot to the North!

I would just disassemble them and throw them in my case tumbler.  Works for me.

Morning Rickard!

I would clean a really dirty set just like any auto part that was cruddy... Diesel fuel/Kerosene and a stiff brush. Followed by compressed air.

If not so dirty,  I agree with NO BLADE. I love my ultra sonic cleaner!!  MOMMA loves it too as its unbelievable on jewelry with water and dish detergent!!

Brake Cleaner and then a spritz of WD-40.  Degrease before using...

Sounds like I should clean them like any other die...  :-\

I usually do like Swampus says but use CLP instead of WD40.  I guess there's no special precaution with them having been used with BP.   ;D   Thanks guys!   ;)

Same with any oil.  It can kill your primers.

WD-40 seems to work really well killing primers non penetrating oils seem not as suited to killing primers. I wish I could find the notice but it was lost long ago that stated WD-40 should not be used on guns other than to stop the blueing process. Seems it had an effect on the metal , maybe in conjunction with the heat generated from shooting. It could have been withdrawn at a later date.
