250-3000 powder selection for carbine length barrel

Can any of you assist me with a choice of powders to use for my Sav 99 250-3000 20" barreled hunting rifle? I reload 87 grn Hornaday bullets. I am looking for powder that does not muzzle flash as much as 3031 and BLC-2 powders I tried. My 308 shoots factory Hornaday ammo well with no flash.

  Never shot any 87 gr. bullets in my 250-3000. This was used for woodchucks only. I used 75 gr. bullets over H380. One sweet shooting rifle.

I have 3 go to powders in the 250. re15, 4064 and h4895. Ive got two 250s a ruger international and a winchester light weight carbine. the win has a 1 in 14 twist and does its best with 87s. My son has killed quite a few deer with that gun using 87 grain sierras. My international has killed a bunch of deer. It is the most handed around gun at camp. I think everyone there has shot deer with it. Odd thing is I use 115-120s in it. reason why is i went through a divorce years ago and had to sell a pile of guns to  pay off the ex. The only .25 cal rifles i kept were the two 250s. I had a pile of 115,117 and 120 grain bullets left. My international shot them well so its all ive used in it since. I run them about 2500 fps out of the little ruger and they dump deer. So well that the gun got the nickname THOR at camp. Nephew shot a 9 pointer one day and came in and said it dropped like it was hit by the hammer of thor and the name stuck. So even though 100 grain bullets are probably ideal in the 250 i go to both other extreams instead. Cant help you with the muzzle blast problem other then to say your probably better off staying away from ball powders as they usualy give more muzzle blast and usually you will get less muzzle blast with heavier bullets.

 youre gonna want to use a faster powder to get the most out of that 20" bbl and avoid flash,
I prefer the hodgson extreme powders for the temperature tolerance, in the extreme line the fastest 2 burn rates listed for a 250@87gr. are benchmark and H4895 I like and use a lot of h4895 so thats what I would go with, benchmark may do as well or better but I dont know/use it.  and if the 4895 doesn't work out its can be used in lots of other loads so it wont be a wasted purchase.

Thank you for the replies. It used to tac drive the ole Remington "Kleen bore" 100 grn core lok's(round nose). They dropped deer like "Thor's Hammer" also. Alway's just one shot, under 100 yards. There all gone and can't find them anymore. The 100's I hand loaded don't group at all and 117's key hole. It has the 1"-14" rate barrel.


The 87 grainers work ok on deer?

Mine likes RL15 with all weight bullets.

Probably because those 100 round noses were a short as a 87 spitzer. IVe shot many deer and like i said saw many killed by family using 250s and the 87s killed just as well as anything. ONly problem with them is when my son was young he hit a few in the guts and those light bullets just dont leave an exit wound and have a very small enterance so it can make for some challanging tracking. One thing ill say though is the couple that were gut shot didnt go far both layed down within sight of were they  were shot. What i ended up doing was downloading them a bit. Run the 87s at about 2700 and they will usually give exit wounds and still kill very well. Keep in mind most of the hunting we do around hear during season is short range stuff. H4895 the powder of the shooting gods. Hard to beat.

My suggestion is to call a couple powder companies and ask them if they have a flash-suppressed powder that will work well for your intended application.  I thought Re-15 was flash-suppressed, but I'm not sure.  Neither am I sure about 748 nor the 4895s.

jgrass, this could be yer lucky day. I had a 250 and mine also shot the Remington 100's real tight but I could no longer find the ammo. A call to the Remington plant many years ago got me in touch with their ammo guy. He gave me the following data and it worked fabulous in my old Savage
39.0gr H380 under a Remington 100 gr Core-lok. Velocity was a little over 2800'ps as I remember. Might give it a try.

Thank you to all. Very informative replies and assistance. Fantastic, New life for the ole Savage 99. I have other rifles, all model 70's pre 64's, but this is my first and favorite. It just handles perfect and always got the job done.
