shikari 45-70
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:03:30 AM »
Saw one of these yesterday, neat looking gun, looked to be in good shape, except one thing.  When the action is closed, it's tight; when you open it, there is a lot of wobble , slop from side to side when you twist it in your hands.  I'm guessing this would be a gun to stay away from; your advice would be appreciated, John  (PS: thank you for answering my questions about my W@H 1871 buffalo rifle, I'm really pleased with it.)

Harley101,

Sounds like a loose forend fit. The spacer can be shimmed as one correction.

I have one of these and it's a nice looking good shooting 45-70.  The nice thing about these rifles is that you can work on them yourself if you have some mechanical ability and get something unique at a really good price.  ;)
Why is there never enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it again?

My Shikari dates back to 1972 and is for trap-door loads.

Is there any other kind?

The model 155 Shikari was only offered with cast iron frames in 44mag and 45-70 by H&R Inc, they were never offered by NEF or H&R1871 on an SB2 frame, so using only trapdoor loads would be prudent.  ;)
