Author Topic: Please recomend a barrel maker. (Read 1099 times)

I just put a deposit down on a very nice original Contender, 30-30 with the old style right handed finger groved grip. I forget what that grip is called. The trigger is fantastic but the 30-30 (10") barrel is more than I need. I would like to get a premium barrel in 10mm and/or .357 mag. I know Bullberry makes great barrels, but I don't want to wait six months. I would appreciate any input on barrel makers that you have been pleased with. I am willing to pay for quality, and willing to wait a reasonable amount of time. Your input please gentlemen (and ladies). Thanx.

If your wanting a 357 I don't know what you would gain by going custom. A factory 357 should out shoot most shooters. KN

I should have been more specific. I want a shorter (8") barrel with a fast twist (1:14) for shooting 180 gr mags and .38 HBWC's.

T/C factory barrel if you want something made in a standard caliber. T/C for a custom unless you have the money for SSK. Money is always my limiting factor.

Ditto on going with SSK. Short wait, JD will make what you want, and his barrels are top drawer.

I have paid for advertising for a few years on this site and never once did I spam or push my products. If a person asked about them I responded and am very disappointed in not even being in the pool for referrals. Supporting the people that have contributed to your site is what you are supposed to be doing. How you word it is fine if you prefer one vendor above another, but an opportunity should be given nontheless by you or your moderators. Yes, it is true On Target Technologies, LLC has only started producing custom barrels for the Contender and Encore this past year and the process is working pretty well. The ability to get work done in a timely fashion is getting there, but to be honest I am a little late on some of them. They are nontheless performing extremely well. Have I got time to send out items for product reviews, not really right now. Is OTT LLC offering a different method or means to get a very customized product out the door, Yes we are. We do not manufacture the normal way as a lot of companies do, so we bring to the table a different approach to allow a true wildcat to be built. Enough said.

Now am I comparing myself to JD/SSK or anyone else for that matter, NO I am not. I have spoken with JD personally as I was beginning down this road and have great respect for him as an individual and as a prolific wildcatter that he is. Look at what he has done and his accomplishments.

With the above stated, my banner is to expire in (6) more days. I would like it known that I am disappointed with the service that was paid for and will the banner which states clearly "Custom TC Barrels" is not going to be renewed.

Very well written post that speaks highly of the kind of person you are. Please pardon my butting in to a post directed at Bill (as it should have been), but you did mention moderators as well... and I had offered my "opinion" on this thread.

Any referrals that I make are from my personal experience, and just my opinion as another registered member of the GBO family. Being a moderator on this site means I sweep up the place behind the others who use it - nothing more. It doesn't mean I am required to push products that I have not used myself any more than any other member of GBO is required to. Advertising is between you and the sites owner.

I have owned many SSK barrels over the 34 years I have been doing TC's - still have several JDJ's. The bulk of the rest of my barrels were all made for me by my friend Fred Smith at Bullberry. While I have tried most of the other custom shops barrels, I have never had the opportunity to try one of your barrels - not yet! So that said, please don't consider my opinions anything against your work - I have little knowledge of it to base any kind of an opinion on. But until I do, I'll also not be able to suggest coming to you over the men I do have a successful long history with. Hope you'll understand.

Mike, for the record I have frequently mentioned you as a possible source for barrels when someone asks. I cannot give them any advice as to the barrels you make because I just plain do not know anything about them from experience.

The question I was answering in this case was:

I've had personal experience with custom barrels by SSK, VVCG and Bellm. Of those I can only express satisfaction with SSKs. The others I let go of rather quickly.

You just cannot reasonably expect me to tell a person I have experience with and am pleased with your barrels when I in fact have no such experience. Had that not been in it I'd have mentioned you and SSK as I have done since you changed your banner from MBMCo to the barrel banner.

Thank You gent's for your replies. I'm eventually going to need barrels in 10mm, .22WMR. I've gotten a quick professional response from Virgin Valley, so I'll order my first one there. I'll take a look at OTT and SSK for my second barrel. I like my T/C to look like a handgun-as opposed to a wrist rifle-so that's why I like 6-8" barrels in handgun calibers.

You have referred in the past as you state and it has been noticed and appreciated. As a customer, this is part of the service that is needed to be seen by the owner and his agents. I see moderators as agents for the larger company, adhering to the policies set by the administrator. Very True that when personal experiences with vendors are asked for, recommendations can only be given in regard to those dealt with. The rub comes in when, and I am not trying to say how things should be worded, if there is no experience with a vendor, good or bad, no indication of a service at all is not a means of supporting an advertiser. This is what advertising is all about, getting the word out for consideration in public.

Now please understand the position I am trying to speak from. This type of non recognition can and may be interpreted as having my operations being lumped in with other businesses that you are not satisfied with, when no experience with mine is the case. Simply stating other avenues are available as they could possibly be advertising with you at the time is all I am saying. Add in a disclaimer to that effect

I am not trying to take business away from VVCG, SSK, nor anyone else. It is not a competition thing with me, I have quite a few ideas in these avenues and am working towards completing some of my own goals. I saw this and wanted you to understand my position and my response.

no one said anything about giving g.b. a free barrel. what i said was that a solution MIGHT be to send a barrel to g.b. for testing. that doesnt mean that g.b. would keep it. i am quite sure he has test fired other guns and/or barrels for review in the past.

I see no reason at all NOT to run a poll if you want to to try and help Mike out with some exposure and get some feedback from the GBO family on his barrels made public. Could be a real shot in the arm for his offerings, or..., but please start the poll as its own topic if you do one and make sure that those voting on it understand that you are ONLY asking for votes or comments from people who have owned and used one of his barrels - no one else.

HAMMERHEAD can watch it (I know I will), and if the responses are favorable AND Mike can produce him a barrel in the very short time frame he is asking for, then I'd say that HAMMERHEAD will have another viable option of who all to contact about having his barrel made.

Covers all the bases this way I think without distracking from the "opinions from experience" already given.
