Cleanest burning factory .45 ammo?
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:47:43 PM »

My friend is going to let me shoot his .45 auto next month.  I'd like to put about 200 rounds through it.  Of course, I'll have to clean it before I return it.

What is the cleanest burning (non-gummy)  factory .45 ammo out there, in 230  grain fmj?

Thanks, Mannyrock

Manny:  I would get some Sellier and Bellot 230 gn ball, which runs at about the original mil-spec velocities, or Winchester ball 230 gn - runs slower but I think burns fairly clean. Good luck and have fun.

It's been a while since I've used factory ammo. I've got some CCI brass case .45 230gr ball in my stash. If memory serves me correctly, they ran pretty clean in my stainless Kimber. A casual inspection of the gun after about 150rds, revealed a reasonably clean gun. It looked more like it had a couple mags run through it. Of course I'm accustomed to shooting lead, that's really dirty.

Mannyrock,

That is a tougher question than it might seem.  When factories make ammo, especially "Promo" ammo, they work up their loads for that lot.  Things that come into play include what powder is available at the time of the lot run, and for what price.  One lot might have a different powder than an identical box of another lot, so one could burn cleaner even though it is the same brand.  While even the Winchester White Box ammo and its SB/Rem?Fed counterparts generally run clean, there will be variations.

FWIW, just my opinion, buy something priced right in a brand that you feel comfortable with, bang away, then take the thing down and clean it.  Few guns are easier to clean than a 1911 (though you didn't specify that as the 45 acp that you'll be shooting).
