question on 30-06
« on: January 21, 2004, 01:48:11 PM »
Thinking of getting an encore with a 30-06 barrel and was wondering how you hold it when shooting. I held one at the gun shop and with a 15" barrel it seems barrel heavy if you hold the grip with both hands but seems awkward to hold the grip with one hand and forarm with the other.

Most people, myself included, use a rest when shooting the Encore - especially the 30.06.  The recoil is substantial, while manageable.  I have yet to shoot mine freehand, but might try the next time I am at the range.  I will probably use, for freehand shooting, what is called (I think) the Taco stance which is what you are describing.  Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah, I too find it hard to imagine shooting offhand with the Encore.  Especially fully laden with a scope, mount, rings, and one cartridge.  I'm guessing that I'll probably opt for off the knee or off the tree kinda shooting with it.  That's what I did with my .44 mag revolver this year - off the knee - worked beautifully!

they are definately guns to be rested. although there are several methods that will work to acomplish this. i first made a set of cross shooting stix out of fiberglass tent poles. light packin, cheap, and easy to make. i have since figured out a better way for me, and nothing extra required to pack with you in the field.
i use a nylon "super sling" made by outdoor connection. any 1"- 1 1/4" nylon sling will work as long as it will adjust up fairly short.
with the sling attached at the forearm and grip, hold the forearm with your left hand, and of course the grip with your right hand. let the sling go across the back of your left elbow. apply outward pressure with you left arm, and slight opposing pressure with your right hand on the grip. with the sling short enough, this tightens up the sling, and is amazingly steady for an offhand hold when caught without a rest.
took 2 deer this past season with this method at 50 and 75 yards. works excellent for me, and a idea for you to try.

Don't y'all know why we mount the spare tire on the back of our Broncos.  Best Contender(or Encore ) rest on the planet.  Actually, I'm w/ the KYODE,  been using the sling for a while and just started using full length shooting sticks about a year ago.  This IS the way to go IMHO.
Question for KYODE.  From your post, I take it that you shoot right handed and from a previous post( I think we were disscussing carrying w/ a sling ) you carry under your right arm.  This seems backwards to me.  I carry w/ the pistol under my left arm and the sling across my chest, over my right shoulder and down across my back.  When I raise to shooting position, the sling is around my neck, under my left shoulder and over my left elbow.  Works for me but I been know for " doing things different ".

yep right handed. yep, quite possible i'm odd
my sling is much shorter. i don't carry across my chest. mine is just hanging over my shoulder, under my arm. for hands free, i hang it over the back of my neck, with the gun laying on my chest. doesn't bounce around, and is fairly comfortable.

Interesting...I may give that a try.  I'm usually the odd one.  I'm using the "just sling it" sling with quick adjust buckle.  Thanks,  Walt  :D

Being right handed I also carry mine under my right arm with the sling it. It's a bit faster to get ready for me as I can grab the grip in the right hand, undo the buckle with the left and grab the forend in one smooth motion.  Now this sounds all well and good, until you get it tangled up in your binocular's and stand there looking like some idiot trying to get out of a net while the deer watched with puzzlement. :)

I had heard that this happend to someone. ;)

I usually try to stay away from quick draw situation and in fact when I'm really hunting I generally have already unlatched the buckle and have the pistol in my hand.  However when the situation comes up, I grab the bottom of the receiver just in front of the trigger with my left hand and release the buckle with my right hand while raising the pistol to firing position and stick my left elbow inside of the sling. I do probably 95 percent of my shooting offhand.  If one can't shoot an Encore or Contender offhand it is time they go back to the basics in handgun shooting.
I bench them when working up a load and that is about it.  I am not super strong, only average and I don't have big hands.  Don't wear shooting gloves or anything of the sort and have never had a problem with them.

I sit on the ground and rest my elbows on my knees - it offers me great stability but the ground is usually nasty during deer season.  Keep an extra pair of pants in the Truck.

I will either use a tree branch or my Stoney shooting sticks.

My previous posts leave the impression that I always shoot off hand w/ sling.  That is not true.  I still look around for a rest....tree...fence post....Bronco spare tire...and now shooting sticks.  But if I have to the sling is there and I do use it together with rest quite often.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt   :D
