Options with fuel oil
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:18:29 AM »
I have a newer fuel oil furnace in my home , So I always have 100 gallons of fuel oil in the tank. Im looking into deisel generators, Pricey. What other options do I have as far as cooking, light, or heat. Ive got multi fuel lanterns & cook stoves, But I would like to add options for fuel oil, because I always have at least 100 gallons or so of fuel oil.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

most cooking and lighting options are more for kerosene which is more refined then the oil for your furnance. No doubt some of them would work fine on it though. Id bet about any keosene lamp would work on fuel oil. It may not be quite as bright and may be a bit stinky but i doubt youd care. Same goes for portable heaters. Ive got a portable kerosene heater. It will work on fuel oil but the fumes are pretty bad and you about have to keep a door open which doesnt do much for keeping the heat in. Still better then freezing though.

If you use other than kero in lamps or heaters that use a wick, not only do they stink a lot, it shortens the life of the wicks too.

I'm not so sure the small portable diesel gensets will last any longer than a QUALITY gas genset.  They are aluminum and run at 3650 RPMs, neither are good for long term diesel motors.

This is why i bought a pto genset for my small tractor.  The tractor motor is cast iron/steel and WILL last, and the PTO genset is larger and able to withstand long running times and the heat it generates.  The tractor will run at a slower RPM, have longer oil change/maintance intervals and can be used for a zillion other things through out the rest of the year.

BritLyt has a lantern that will run on bio, which isn't as good as fuel oil in a stove or lantern. They also make single burner kero pressure stoves and an adapter to turn their lantern into a stove. They are expensive though $207 for 500 cp lantern and stove adapter.

You can search kerosene pressure stoves and find them sometimes online. I paid $12 for one. Also kerosene pressure lanterns are still being used in a lot of countries as well. You can find them for $20 or so. In 3rd world countries they use fuel oil most of the time instead of kerosene. India makes a lot of them, so they aren't to hard to find. Just hard to find them under $50.

Bottom line and i know you dont want this answer but cost wise and convience wise your probably better off picking up a a couple 100 lb propane tanks and keeping two differnt fuels around or even switching your fuel oil furnace to a propane unit if you want only one fuel.
