Encore reloading question????? Case Seperation
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:38:12 PM »
I have a 204 ruger barrel for my encore and I have been working up loads for it.I have finally found a good load for it, but I have to trim my cases after evey reload.I trim the to 1.840 and after firing they measure from 1.847-1.852. I also had one of the cases seperate when I broke the action open after I shot it today.

Is this a sign of excessive head space. I dont think the cases should strech that much.

Thanks
jake

Sounds like pressures are a little high and you are springing the action.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Could be that you have a long chamber,  but being a break action Encores do tend to flex a bit, so if a case is full length resized each time it can lead to excessive stretching and early case head separation especially if the loads are a bit warm.  First thing I'd do is to check the cases you've been using to see if they are also beginning to separate.  Use a straightened paper clip with just the last 1/8" bent at 90 degrees, and use it as a feeler on the inside of the case.  Here is a good article that can inform and guide you:  http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2010/05/reloading-case-head-separations.html  Be sure to discard any bad cases.

Next thing you should do is make sure you are resizing your cases to minimize headspace.  I outline the technique I use is in another post in this forum, http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,252386.msg1099478147.html#msg1099478147

Hope this helps.
