24 inch Barrel ?
« on: February 22, 2012, 02:51:50 AM »
Has anyone had good results with the 24 inch barrel on the ULTRA LIGHT 12 gauge slug guns ? Just wondered how many cut them down, and how short. :)  It just seams a bit long for a slug barrel to me.

Thinking of cutting it down to 20 inches, any thoughts, good or bad idea ?

I have a 20 inch Rossi 20 ga that I bought for a youth hunter, it shoots slugs a foot low at 25 yards, my theory is either not burning all the powder, or not stable.  My Remington 1100 and Mossberg slug guns have 24" barrells, I shoot smooth bores and foster type slugs, so this may not apply to your shotgun.

I believe most, if not all, the powder would be burned in 20 inches.  Shotguns are low pressure machines operating at around 10,000 psi and use the faster burning powders.  Unique is used in shotguns and pistols (and squib loads in some rifles).  Then given the huge barrel volume per inch of travel it should burn it all in a fresh shell.  I've seen really old paper shells actually leave powder burning in an open Weaver choke.  My quess would be that it's not stable or the sights are not regulated for a slug.
