Extractor Modification
« on: February 25, 2012, 03:42:37 PM »
I took my 357 Mag to my gunsmith so he could make it a Max, and I asked him to see if he could improve the extractor.  He did!  I didn't measure the extractor before I took it to him so I'm not sure how much it improved, but it extracts now to .198 inch on my digital caliper.  He told me how much it changed but I was so distracted looking at the extractor I don't remember what he told me.  He is making the same modification to my 44 Mag so I'll try to remember to write down the amount of improvement.

Tell us how he did it please, I only have one extractor barrel and MUCH prefer the ejector barrels. I would like to do the modification to my only extractor barrel. It is a late .44 Mag with the correct sized bore as opposed to an early oversized bore .44 Mag....<><.... :)

I think it is in the FAQs.  Quick posted about adding a shim to take the "slop" out between the extractor and the cam that pushes the extractor when you open the action.  Would be nice to know if this gunsmith has figured out a better way to skin that cat.

I'll give a shot at explaining what my gunsmith did.  There is a reason I use a gunsmith.  Me plus gun modification = disaster.  The key is the second picture, and the half moon pin.  He fabricated it.  Also he mentioned he took a little off the extractor.  I think he meant the back but I'm not sure.  He also noted his new pin would be weaker than the factory rolled pin, so no snap open.  Not a concern for me.

I can see what he did in the pic, the extractor cam roll pin appears to have been replaced by a solid pin like on the Rossi Wizard, then flats ground on the lower half to allow it more travel, a shim on the end of the extractor will increase extractor travel by ~.030 to about .200", see Simple Extractor Improvement in the FAQs, a nice improvement, but way short of the modified ejector travel which extracts about .280".

Do the two improvements add together to make a better improvement?

Maybe, you'll have to try it.  ;)

I'm totally ignorant but also curious.  can you take the ejector guts from a shotgun barrel and turn an extractor handi barrel into an ejector barrel?
I have said ejector guts.

No, the underlug has to be machined for a factory style extractor, but you can convert an ejector so it only extracts by removing a little metal with a dremel or grinder, all of this is in the FAQs.

I don't use the classified or pay it forward.  I like to find people with a need I can fill.  the post by MSP made me think I might be able to help him.

I offered to convert  Andy's 44mag barrel to an ejector a couple years ago for the cost of shipping the barrel if he'd get the parts, the offer still stands.  ;)
