How do folks like the Williams FP style peep?
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:02:25 AM »
I read the posts on sights in the FAQs.  I just wondering if folks find the Fool Proof style sight as clumsy compared to the more streamlined WGRS or the ghost ring makers?

I own the FP and WGRS on other rifles but not with the top tang mount system.  One thing I like about the FP style is that the peep is closer to one's eye.

I'm still unclear if a front sight swap would be required with the FP.

I'd certainly include the Skinner sight in your search.  ;)

I haven't seen what a FP looks like that fits the Handi-Rifle, if its made the same as mine on my Winchester 94, I'd rather go with the much smaller, less obtrusive Skinner.

There are a few pics of the FP sight in the FAQs sights links, here's an FP-TK, the FP doesn't have the knobs.

I have gone to Skinner sights on two of my rifles (Marlin 38-55 & Shrikari 45-70) and am about to fit a new brass one on my Buffalo Classic.  On my other rifles these sights work great.  I agree with Tim, that you should consider Skinner.  They make sights that are designed to fit the H&R and they work great for a hunting set up.

I have the FP-TK on my BC and have no problems with it.
What would work better for you depends on what you are going to do with your rifle. Long range shooting or changing distance often is where the Williams sight will shine. For hunting where you'll most likely sight it in and leave it, I'd go with the Skinner. They are lower profiled and just look sexy on the Handi.
Either one should work fine with your factory front sight.
If you are puting either on a BC with a globe front and are going to use it for hunting, I would really look at the Skinner front sight...that globe sucks in low light in the woods.

I went cheap and bought the WRS.  It works fine but being made in aluminum, once you tighten the set screws, indentations are made in the body and then you cannot do fine tuning because the tip of the screws bring you back to the indentation point.  Later on, I read that the first thing to do with the WRS screws is to file their ends flat to prevent the indentations in the body.  I should have gone with the more expensive Skinner.
