GM torque converter and transmission
« on: February 07, 2012, 02:07:47 PM »
Transmission would not stay locked in overdrive at 45-50 mph.  Mechanic put in a new GM converter.  Truck is a 2005 Z71.  In less than a tank of gas, the problem returned.  He called Jasper and they said that pieces of the old converter probably got in the the transmission and I needed a new transmission.  Ouch.  Only got 83K miles on the truck and it has never been abused.

Anyone got any info they can share?  I put a bottle of Lucas treatment in it today before a 150 mile trip.  It is much better but far from fixed.  After adding the treatment it seems to eventually lock up and stay that way until I slow down and the transmission has to shift back through the gears.  Then it flutters for about three miles and finally stays locked in overdrive.

charles raise hell with your dealers service dept and dont stop there. Contact Gms service headquarters. Dont give up keep making calls and making emails. My 06 has 60k on it and is using a quart of oil ever 1000miles. After raising  hell for about 6months GM finally caved and is doing a oil consumption test on it. Come to find out im not the only one with this problem and the GM trannys have been known to be a weak link in there trucks for years. I dont know if they will rebuild my engine or not but they will surely get harassed till i die if they dont.

Charles find you a transmission man who knows the difference between crap and apple butter.  The one you're presently dealing with has no clue if he's depending on Jasper for his info.  The L460E in your truck isn't all that complicated as long as you have an understanding of the electronic control system and is easily diagnosed.  As you now know, changing the converter was nothing more than a stab at the wind.  Find yourself a local trans shop that actually builds their own transmissions and let them diagnose it for you.  Could be, and probably is, as simple as a faulty solenoid or relay.

Lloyd if it makes you feel better to fight with these folks then by all means continue to do so because that is likely the only satisfaction you will receive.  The usual corporate response is that up to 1 quart in 500 miles is not considered excessive.  It is all about perception and they hold all the cards.  Besides, if they fixed your's they would then have to fix millions of others and we as taxpayers simply can't afford it.   ;D

you could try a couple fluid and filter changes quick if you think debris is the prob. it seems at one time certain tranny shops offered a pressurized flush. might do some research on that.the valve body is prob what is plugged up. could it be removed and washed up and blown out good?
