I am becoming very frustrated.
I am looking for set of stocks for my new Colt Python. I can't afford--after spending my money (all)--real Ivory---which I would love  .
I want target stocks. I have found a couple of places that I can get some nice wood targets---I want either Micarta or Corian (mainly for the color of old Ivory).
I have been in contact with a couple of CUSTOM makers. I thought custom was custom. I digress, One said he didn't have any in stock and another said that he wouldn't do them.
I guess I am back too wood--which is not too bad--just not what is called for.

You should be glad you could not get them.  I tried to tell my boss, (back when I had one), that real ivory was not a good choice for his 1911, I told him to get stag.  He bought a set of both, the ivory grip panel cracked with the first shot,(panels installed by our gunsmith).  He then tried the stag which he still has on after three years use.    Bye the way, those ivory grips after he got them replaced sold for $300.  Just love it when you can tell your boss "I told ya so".

Since this will be a safe queen, the issue is not with sturdiness but with esthectics. That is not ment as a slap in the face, however; the whole of the question is if someone is a custom maker why can't they do custom.
As an aside, what am I to do---knowing my desires?

try the sites for scrimshaw there are several with Ivory and faux Ivory. You can get them plain or worked.

I think Keith Brown only does Smith's, but you may want to contact him and see if he will do some for your Python. His wood grips are drop dead gorgeous.

I had the same problem trying to find micarta grips for my C&B revolvers.      I finally resigned myself to the fact that if I want them I'll have to make them.

There are lots of substitute ivory materials out there that can be used for serviceable grips.   Some of them are very similar in grain and color and will age like ivory.   Most are polymers with or without additives, French Ivory is celluloid, Galalith (Milk Stone) a protein plastic, cow or ox bone, aged boxwood, etc.
 
However, lots of places to get grips.   A favorite I've used for decades is Boone Trading Co.   Mostly for ivory & fossil ivory for grips, custom crafts/scrimshaw, and Native American Eskimo artifacts I collect. 
 
They offer both ivory and faux ivory target grips for the Python.   
All it takes is $800-1200 for the ivory... the faux grips are cheap at $75.

Don't know if this link will help, but these guys have several configurations.  I'm sure a call to them might land you something close.    I've seen some American Holly that looked an awful lot like Ivory.

Igive up. I will not put wood on the Python.
i have atled to 7 custom makers--some are so called custom.
They won't do them for some of the following reasons:
Don't do Pythons any more
Only sell from stock and will not guarentee fit
Don't do double actions anymore
Don't do target grips on Pythons
I saved up too 500 dollars.

     William:  This AM there were 66 Pr. of grips on E-bay to fit a Python everything from rubber, plastic, wood and even factory grips price range from low to high.   HTH.   Jim

The problem with grips for the Python is the fact that they were all handmade in the custom shop and there are differences--some very small--in frames.
In talking to these folks they told me that IF grips were not fitted to the frame there might be extra work doing a final fit.
Some of the so called custom makers told me that they could not guarentee a perfect fit without the gun.
i am just not willing to take that chance--especially with my preferred choices of stock material.

 A good-looking grip is the sambar stag. I bought a set for 89.00 in 1980 for my mod.28-2 in 44Mag., before getting into the fitting, I put a set of pac. grips on it, while shooting it I realized how much I liked them, so I have never fitted the stags but they sure are purrtty, got some of the rough brown textured antler lines in them, maybe I'll get around to fitting them sometime soon the smith has a bead blasted nickle finish 6.5" BBl.  As Larry said there are all kinds of materials and prices available out there. I also like the micarta material. the white or other light colors could be scrimshawed very nicely as well.
  One of the knifemakers may know where you can get your desired material for the Python's new Scabs and then you can carry it in your Scabbard.
