500 S&W rechamber

Hey gents,
 
I know that many of you have done something of this nature before, so naturally I have come for advice.  I have a 500 S&W Handi Rifle and want to have it rechambered or rebored to something in the 50-90 category.  I have done quite a bit of research and feel that it would be safe due to much lower pressure levels in the 50-90.  I would either have to wildcat the 50-90 to .500 or have the rifle rebored to .510.  Both ways are not cheap, from what I have found $300ish to have a custom reamer and dies made or $250 to $400 for a rebore.  Here is the problem, I have called just about every gunsmith that has a website and no one will take on this project.  Do any of you know of a smith that will work on H&R/ NEF rifles and work at a reasonable rate?

Check with JES, he'll get my business on my 45-70 BC to 50-140 after I finish up with the 499HE on my 500S&W barrel which Ed Hubel shipped yesterday, btw!

There won't be any range trips until the weather gets better, it's been cold, windy and rainy for the last few days, woke up to a couple inches of snow today, no wind tho!!

Thanks Tim, I called JES and got some very exciting information.  Turns out, he will do it.    This just made my day!

I wonder if that $250 rebore includes a new chamber cut? If so, I may see a 6.5x30-30 improved in my future.

When I called, he quoted me $250 plus reamer rental for rechamber and rebore.

...What Dinny said, JES turned me down for a 6.5 rebore.


My .223 bull is at Delta waiting it's turn to become a 6.5mm.
I plan to clean out the chamber and play with it as a 6.5 TCU type and then send it to David for 6.5x30-30AI. (If he agrees to do it.)

I find this interesting. Usually they won't rebore anything that close in caliber. Although I can see that reaming to .500-.502 which removes the lands and then rifling to .510 would work well. But it would require a very precise setup.
