ring-ring ring-ring RING which one?
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:30:12 AM »
I know you all have a go to ring and I'm wanting to know what they are. my h&r 30-06 ate my last ring/scope combo. called the company and they covered me under warranty even though I wasn't the original buyer.  :o  So last week got the new scope in and similar rings and took it to a shop to get it mounted and bore sighted all at once. took it to the range. with one box of ammo(20 rounds) the ring base loosened up 3 different times.

SOO I'm looking for something hardcore. thinking along the lines of burris xtreme tacticals......any thoughts?

Will try that but not very hopeful. don't know what it is about this gun but feels more like a 338 Lapua than an -06

I have never ever had a problem with Weaver. From 22LR up through 338 WM.

What I do for big kickers is to install a steel base and rings.

Burris ZEE rings are excellent as are Warne Maxima rings.

My 500 broke a set of Leupold PRW rings that I had previously placed much faith in. I still like them but will not use on heavy recoiling calibers.

I too like the Burris ZEE rings.
Never had a problem with them.
Scopes is another question.
The only Tasco I ever had any luck with was one of their EURO Scoped 30mm tube.
Mostly I use the old, discontinued Simmons AETEC Scopes, NOT the new MASTER SERIES line.
Have never had an old Aetec problem on any caliber ever!

For some reason I have alot of Millett Angle-loc.  Windage adjustable and they've alway held.  Steel and protective bedding strips are included.  Variety of heights and also extended versions.  Gotta set them precisely though for them to be worth the effort.  Seem very solid.

Oh, I like the EWG bases, though a bit high and am getting a Warne steel tactical rail to try out.  Both have alot of adjustment.

Otherwise I just use the factory bases because that's what they came with.

Locktite...

I used a DNZ Game Reaper on my 30-30. The company said not to use any lok-tite on the base or rings. I have put 100+ rnd.s through the gun with no loosening at all.

I have one set of these and asside form them not offering low enough heights they are very solid and should hold up to anything...

I use the Burris Zee rings on everything.

Me too.....and Loc-tite.  My .500 didn't shake the rings loose, but it did destroy two cheap scopes I was playing with.  They came on a couple of used rifles I bought.

I've read a lot of you like Burris Zee's I just prefer at least 4 screws per ring. Glad to see a review on the gamereaper saw them at Bass Pro and online but couldn't find much on them. My base seems solid but is aluminum. Replace or leave it alone? Someone said its an original base that's discontinued.

First thing I always do is remove the base and lock-tite the screws.  I then Lock-tite the ring base to the base plate.  You know those big knurled nuts.  Once I get the scope mounted where I want it, I remove one ring screw at a time and Lock-tite it as well.  Never had a base or ring problem with a Handi.  Steel, Aluminum, have had no problems with either, since Handi's are not bad in the recoil department.  I also do not use heavy weight scopes on Handi's for recoil to work on.  The 45-70 is the only Handi that produces enough recoil to be a problem, and have had no problems with it.  I have three 30-06s, and one .35 Whelen.  Recoil is mild to moderate with them.  The mild one has a brake.

Recoil is a subjective subject.  I shoot a lot of .338 Win Mags, .338/378 Weatherby Mag, Ultra Mags and a .50BMG.  But the worst one I own is a Remington 600, in .350 Rem Mag.  That little sucker will knock your socks loose.  Beautiful little gun, Laminated stock from the factory, vented rib on top of the barrel, butterknife bolt, 18" barrel, just a wonderful little gun to behold.  But when you pull that trigger, the beauty ends there.  If your nose, or the orbit around your eye, is not bleeding, you will swear your right shoulder is broken.  And that is with a 200gr bullet.

Now the Weatherby, and a Night Force scope, that's a whole nother story.

touche. personally I find the 180gr bullets I've been shooting in this lightweight single shot rifle to be more than I expected. I shot my friends bolt 1906 era military 30-06 and felt no such recoil and the noise was way lower as well..... but this thread is about rings working loose from recoil not which guns have more or less recoil. a single shot will always have more recoil than a auto or a bolt with more mass. just my .02

I have a DNZ game reaper on my .44 mag Handi and Burris Z rings on my .223 and I like them both.  I don't have a problem with the height.  Because of neck damage, I can't get in low on a rifle so I put tallish rings on all my scoped guns...

Here are the rings I decided to go with. Shot some handloads through it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to be very close to my previous poi 3 inches to the left and I was good. The hand loads although 180gr barnes TSX tipped bullets were moderate recoil. More like a 150gr factory load. overall very happy with my hand load and new rings.

The last pic is a muzzle brake that a machinist friend of mine is helping me make. Hoping it works as good as advertised.

Those are some serious tall rings you got there!  Do you have any idea what kind of load that setup will put on the base and rings when you shoot that thing?  With the scope sitting that high is is no wonder that it works the rings loose.  The lower the ring heigth the less load is put on the ring/base attachment.  Larry

Them rings are far too high for that application . Are they see through?

first off I got these on amazon and had to guess which would be right without going too low. The scope clears the hammer by about 3/8". I didn't wanna risk going to low. These are the rings that are replacing the cheap alum. ones supplied with the scope. no report yet on them working loose, although if you look at them they have a nut on the base instead of a thumb screw. They have a small cutout under the scope but not intended to be a see-through. The added height actually helps me... They have a lot more surface area on the base than the previous rings. I could get some low rings but I think so far I'm pretty happy with these. and should be less of a load when my brake gets installed.

I also put the rings on opposite each other.
