First thing I always do is remove the base and lock-tite the screws. I then Lock-tite the ring base to the base plate. You know those big knurled nuts. Once I get the scope mounted where I want it, I remove one ring screw at a time and Lock-tite it as well. Never had a base or ring problem with a Handi. Steel, Aluminum, have had no problems with either, since Handi's are not bad in the recoil department. I also do not use heavy weight scopes on Handi's for recoil to work on. The 45-70 is the only Handi that produces enough recoil to be a problem, and have had no problems with it. I have three 30-06s, and one .35 Whelen. Recoil is mild to moderate with them. The mild one has a brake.
Recoil is a subjective subject. I shoot a lot of .338 Win Mags, .338/378 Weatherby Mag, Ultra Mags and a .50BMG. But the worst one I own is a Remington 600, in .350 Rem Mag. That little sucker will knock your socks loose. Beautiful little gun, Laminated stock from the factory, vented rib on top of the barrel, butterknife bolt, 18" barrel, just a wonderful little gun to behold. But when you pull that trigger, the beauty ends there. If your nose, or the orbit around your eye, is not bleeding, you will swear your right shoulder is broken. And that is with a 200gr bullet.
Now the Weatherby, and a Night Force scope, that's a whole nother story.
