Correct powde load....
« on: December 30, 2011, 03:33:33 PM »
I have been shooting 85grains of Pyrodex as well as Goex in my Lyman deerstalker.  I am shooting TC Maxiball and maxi hunter .
This is what I've found but it's a little confusing
Rifles
.50
.495" RB  240 gr. Sabot ,335 gr. Sabot ,420 gr. Maxi
110 grs. 2Fg or 100 grs. 2Fg or 100 grs. 2Fg or 100 grs. 2Fg or
90 grs. 3Fg 90 grs. 3Fg 80 grs. 3Fg 80 grs. 3Fg

Is 85g Pyrodex too much or OK?

Its fine. Personally I like 3F. It burns cleaner in my rifle. I also use a lubed felt wad under bullet.

3f Goex? I'm new to this so please forgive me.  Or Pyrodex 3F?

Pyrodex RS meters the same as 2F. PyrodexP meters the same as3F. Go to the Hodgdon site and  search Pyrodex and hit data on the bottom of the page. Load info is there.

From what's been posted so far, I think perhaps the basics need to be discussed for a minute.  Forgive me if I get too basic, but our new friend does not seem to have a complete grasp of what we enjoy and take for granted.

Goex is real black powder, made of charcoal, saltpeter, and sulfer.  Pyrodex is a chemical compound designed to mimic real black powder, but is made more like smokeless powder.  Goex is a mixture of it's components and cannot be called a compound because the ingredients do not combine in the same manner as Pyrodex's components.  Goex, and all real black powders of any brand, must be ground and screened (seperated) into various sizes.  The same batch of black powder will produce 1F, 2F, 3F,4F,and 5F.  The "F" stands for "fine" the number is a designator for how fine or small the granual, or kernel is. As a general rule of thumb 1F is used in cannons, 2F is used in rifles (.45 cal and over), and shotguns (as well as black powder cartridges).  3F is intended for pistols, and rifles 45 cal and under. 4F and 5F are for flintlock ignition pans, flash powder, and have no place with percussion guns.  Pyrodex RS, and Select are to be used in rifles and shotguns of all calibers.  Pyrodex "P" is for pistols, and small bore rifles (.32 to perhaps .50 cal)

I hope this helps, I strongly recommend your next purchase is a book that covers black powder and sporting rifles.  I recommend "The complete Black Powder handbook" by Sam Fadala.  The information in the book is accurate, and non-biased.

The answer is yes, 85 grains of RS is fine. But don't weigh Pyrodex! It is supposed to be measured by volume. Use a measure calibrated for 85 grains of black powder. The Pyrodex is lighter, and you will overcharge if you try to weigh it.

I use loads of 85 to 105 grains of both 2F and 3F GOEX in my .58.  The 3F burns a little cleaner, but I get a little better accuracy with 2F.  It's not a big difference, but it shows up with five shot groups at 100 yards.

careful, a walk on the dark side is very addictive.  Can be dangerous too, since goex will clean up with plain water  ;)

3F should do fine, start with your mentioned 85 grain load (just be sure you have enough lube on the patch / projectile.
