Revolver for Predator Hunting

I have decided to do more hunting with a handgun, both to give me something new and to make it a little more challenging.  I currently have 45's, 44's, 357's and 22LR intended for hunting and some others mixed in intended for personal defense.  I have also recently switch from mostly big game hunting to mostly predator hunting which where I hunt is coyotes and bobcats (fox too, but not many).

I have been contemplating what would be a good revolver/revolver round to use as a predator gun.  I am having all kinds of thoughts and fun looking into this, so thought I might open it up to you guys to.  I am thinking cost wise (both gun and ammo) 22 mag may be the way to go, but then it would be a little light on coyotes.  FA came out with a 22 based on the .357 case if I remember right, this may be on the high side for gun cost.  The new .327 would be ok if they made something with a long barrel, but then pelt holes would be a little large.  I am really not locked in to anything and have just begun to think about it, so let me know what kinda ideas you have.

Matt:  my idea is that you are already covered.  Your 357 will cover all your needs.  If you want to use the 22 on Fox or Bobcat, the hunt would be more challenging certainly but I would opt for something a bit more decisive if the ranges stretch out there.  IMO.

Come on Mikey, a guy needs an excuse for a new gun.  You got me thinking again...a hard cast SWC may not be to bad on a pelt.

Maybe the Taurus 22 hornet revolver.  Never shot one but the cartridge is good ;)

Taurus 17SS6 in 17 HMR or a 991SS6 22 Mag or a 218ss10 or 12 or 6 chambered for .218 Bee or the Hornet already mentioned

Matt:  OMG.  I'm so sorry.  What the hay was I thinkin'??  Of course you need a new gun - holy schmidt, I musta had a brainphart. 

Since you alaready have a 1911 and are familiar with the action, please let me recommend a nice new 38 Super or 9x23 Winchester; plenty of 9mm ball slugs available to reduce pelt damage and more than one 38 Super or 9x23 Wincester load is exactly the same as the fabled 125 gn 357 load - nice for predators.  Or you can try a new 10mm - hard hitting and flat shooting.  Many options. 

If you are anywhere outside ny and in a state that allows sales of the new Kal-tec pmr30, that should be a winner.  HTH.

A 6" .357 mag with either 158 gr. SWC or 125 gr (or larger) SJSP, or .38 LRN. These would minimize pelt damage on yotes.

Before i even Finished reading my first thought was the 22hornet. The new tauruses are good. Also you could look into a used 32-20 with cast bullets it would work great. If you like singleshots whatabout a encore pistoul in 223? The 357 would work too. Too many guns too little time to try em all...

basing my experience on 357 for deer, a sturdy bullet will put a hurting on a predator, but leave a small hole in & out.

The 357 will work great.However, I have been using the 22 long rifle pistol and standard high velocity HP with great results on coyote for the past two years and have a count of 25 so far. It is cheap to shoot, light , low recoil, and low noise. I have not had a coyote go any farther than 25 yards but don't shoot any farther than 70 yards. You could use reduced loads in your hunting pistol for improving your hunting . Hope this helps.

Here's one more vote for the .357. Hey, if you want to buy another gun, there's nothing wrong with having more than one .357!  ;D ;D ;D

By the way, the proprietary Freedom Arms .22 you spoke of, is the .224/32 FA, which is based on a necked down and shortened by .070" .327 Federal case.

.32's in all configurations have long been the predator/trapper's friend.  In .327 Fed, with it's ability to also shoot .32 H&R Mag. and 32 S&W long or short, it's a great fill all.  Charter made an all stainless 4" barreled .327 federal called the Patriot.  It appears they have discontinued it now, but if you find one, it'd be a good all round varmint pistol.

The Ruger Blackhawk .30 carbine is my choice.  Scoped shooting 90gr XTPs, very effective Coyote killer.

I agree, the 32's are an excellent general choice in a revolver for predators for the ranges you'd be using it.   Enough to get it done with a marginal hit, not hard on pelts, etc.   I've had a few 32 revolvers over the years, but the one I used for predators way back when was a 32-20 Win Colt Police Positive Special that was way older than I was.   I shot a lot of coyotes, diggers and a coastal blacktail with it late 60's to mid 70's in CA, predators and a pronghorn along the west slopes of the Rockies after that to the late 80's when I sold it.

I have hunted predator and Texas hog with a 357 mag on my hip.  Never got to it though, I have a 357 mag Winchester Trapper.   With a 16" barrel and ghost ring sights it handles almost as well as my 357 S&W.  I load with 125 Buffalo Bore for out to 125 yds.  Somebody dumped thier Rottweiller up on a ranch by my brother in law where it turned feral real quick.  At 80 yds I hit it twice, but second shot wasn't really needed.
