Confused about hardness
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:23:22 PM »
Very confused about lead hardness for PP.  I have misc lead, wheelweights, some range scrap, also some linotype pieces.  I could mix, but can't test.

But this is for PP so it shouldn't matter that much... should it?

Not really ready to pay for a hardness tester.

If you have enough of each type of alloy, it might be worth trying each separately to see if one is more accurate than another.  I find that near any type of lead that I've put into a paper patch works well.  I don't have a hardness tester and don't want to pay for one as well.
I shoot wheel weights for practice and then shoot almost pure lead for deer hunting, works fine for me.  Rifles have been a Marlin 1895 and a Ruger No. 1, both in 45-70.

I paper patch bullets cast from wheel weights.  They shoot and kill hogs quite well.

Depends on the twist rate, but 20:1 muzzleloader alloy works great in my 1:10 twist 30-06 at 2700 fps. Basically the softer the better until you are pushing well above 50,000 psi.
