Another itch scratched. hornet
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:17:43 AM »
Picked up a new hornet today.  One of those calibers that I never really wanted until recently (when this handi disease started) but this one was a good deal.  This has the matte finish, bull barrel and the "painted" black stock.  That finish is some kinda tough.  It has been cleaned top to bottom and as soon as I can get some hornet dies she will go to the range.  Hope it is a good one.
Handis: .17 mach2 (x2), .22 lr, 22 hornet, .22 jet, .223, .243, .270, .280, .357 max (x2), 35 remington, 35 whelen, 45-70, 445sm, 30-30, 410, 500 S&W, 50 AK

Picked it up at a shop but there is more to it than that.  Had a guy with it for sale on a FB gunpage.  Sent him a message with an offer and he didn't get back to me for 3 days.  Said he wished he had taken my offer but didn't get it before he traded it.  I was telling a buddy of mine that I missed out on a good deal and told him about the rifle.  He calls me the next day and says "I found a hornet for you" and starts to describe it.  I cut him off and finished describing it and told him that was the gun I missed out on.  The shop owner held it for me till the next day when I could make it up.  I guess I was meant to have it.

I guess I have never seen one with a stainless matte finish either. I know they made some stainless barrels, did this one get a bead blast finish sometime in it's life?

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny,
I wish I knew.  It looks to be factory.  I will take a close up of the barrel and frame to show you guys.  Maybe someone else will know if they made factory bead blasted/matte that year.  Tim?????

VERY NICE!!!

Looks allot like my 223!!

Hopefully Tim will be able to look it up for you to confirm/deny if it's SS.

Like I said it looks an aweful lot like my 223 in satin nickle.

Hope it shoots as good as it looks!!!

Try lil gun powder and a 35g Hornady bullet!  Amazing groups in three diff hornets I own!!

That gun looks almost exactly like my nickel .223 did when I got it. I sanded the stock off and refinished it though. Dont care much for the painted stocks. Nice score, I would love to find a hornet that matches my .223 to add to my collection.

I am guessing it is nickel not stainless but don't know that for sure. Thanks for the load data.  Looking for some dies now.  This one will have to be reloaded for.  I don't think I can swing a buck a pop or so for factory ammo.

I may be wrong or (a little CRS) about this but here goes. It's probably a stainless barrel, looks like one I have. Receiver is probably Nickel. Thinkin? they only made stainless receivers on them 45-70s? Unless one was sent in for a Hornet barrel acc.
I think I heard of only a couple true Bull Barrel Hornets and don't remember them being Stainless. Refer to first sentence and wait for TIM ;D  Otherwise it sounds like a fairly rare gun and lucky find TWICE anyway. Enjoy it and hope it shoots good ;)

I don't really have any thing to add, bigvarmint pretty much nailed it as far as I know, I can't say that I know of any SS bull barrel Hornets, someone here has a standard contour SS Hornet tho, negative on the SS frame unless as bv said. FWIW, I bought an "SS" 30-30 barrel on ebay once upon a time, only to find out it was just painted french grey.  ::) It was still a great shooter after I stripped and blued it tho!  ;)

If you get a chance , can you measure the Dia. at the muzzle ? I'm just wondering what profile they actually used .

Finally stopped and measured it.  Don't think is a bull barrel after all.  Sorry for the mis-info guys.

Yep , its a bull barrel , just measured all 3 of mine , their running between .790 and .805 , its also the same profile that was used on my 22" 45/70 barrel .

So it looks like they did a few diffrent , one of a kind rifles , with yours and mine being the only Hornet bulls that I know of so far .

Yep, I think you found a good nut and was lucky to get the second chance. As long as it don't shoot sideways ::)  Wonder why the other Nut got rid of it :o  Sorry but what's a FB gunpage? Even the easy ones take me a while :(  If it shoots good you owe Rocko a drink ;D  Let us know. I'm thinking about sighting in my Hornet Super Lite right now but am tired and sore from a Hard Day Of WorK :'(

Was gonna shoot some 357s I loaded last night but the wind is finally calming and you got me thinkin Hornet :-\ ;D

I think you are right all the way around.  Not sure why the guy got rid of it.  There are a bunch of local gun selling/trading pages on Facebook for MO.  I always watch them for Handis since I have the sickness.  Rocko don't want a drink, he wants my 35 rem.  I am going to let him shoot it as much as he wants!

So you are an enabler to poor Rocko, his juice is just the 35 ;D  I must of sighted my SL Hornet in and forgot. I loaded some 30 gr V.G.s and at short range they are right on. Must be that little Leupold scope cw made me buy ;)  After seeing where they hit I shot a 1 gallon jug filled with water. Very EXPLOSIVE 8)  The little Hornet is a blast to shoot.

Just ordered sierra 40gr hornets and 35 gr Hornady V-max. I also ordered 100 brass.  Cabelas has $2 shipping if any of you guys have points that need to be spent.  I have 4 lbs of lil' gun for my maxi so that shouldn't be a problem.  Don't know what else I might try for a load.  Any other suggestions. All should be here in 4-5 days so I will head out as soon as I can get some loaded up.
