243 85 gr hp gamekings vs. 87 gr hp hornadys
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:00:05 AM »
i use the gamekings in my 6mm and my 243 but i looked at the hornady bullet and it looks a little more aerodynamic. has anyone used both and compared? or does anybody use the hornady's and like them?

The 87gr HP hornandy is a match bullet, so I wouldn't use them for hunting(they look a bit more streamline than the sierras though).  The 85gr sierras is designed for medium game and many people brag about their killing abilities so I'd stick with'em for hunting.  As for shooting paper, who knows which one would shoot best in your gun.  I've shot the 85gr sierras and my gun did'nt like them much(1.5" groups at a 100yds when it'll do under .75") but I'm not slamming them, alot of people have great sucess with them on paper and game.  For me I've settled on the 100gr speer grand-slams for deer and 70gr hpbt sierras for paper, groundhog, and turkey.  Love these two bullets in the 243 along with the 70gr nosler ballistic-tip.

thanks dave. i'm shooting a 6mm rem. and it doesn't like the heavier bullets. i get pretty good groups with the sierra and they do a number on deer.

I have used the hornady 87gr bthp, but only once. Shot a big doe broadside at 30yrds and she hit the ground like a rock. It also had complete penetration. My hornady book lists this bullet as a game bullet, not a varmit bullet.

The first deer I ever killed was with a Hornady 87grHp in front of some IMR4350. Though I've used 100gr bullets for about the last 20 yrs, this past year I again loaded up my "nostalgia load" and busted 2 does within 15 minutes of the sun coming up. Neither were "dead right there" but with about 10-20 yds both piled up. I've used the Sierras with good luck also. For my 243, a near max payload of IMR4350 works great. Check the manual on your 6mm to see if this powder is listed and give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

no experience with the hornadys but have shot a few deer with the sierras back in the day. they worked just fine but no better then 100 grain sierras or corelocks.

Hornady has the 87gr BTHP list for Varmit/medium game bullet and I use that bullet in my 243AI for antelope.

When I live in Ca I used that Sierra 85gr BTHP gameking couple times in a 243 didn't have the best results with them that was back in the early 70's.  I'd switched over to their 100gr bullet back then and I just used the 85gr BTHP for varmits.

i just ordered some of the 87 gr berger vld hunting bullets and i'm going to try those. maybe they'll give me the accuracy i want with the same killing ability as the sierra and hornady.

I've had the BTHP act like its supposed to and often as not like a FMJ.  Inconsistent performance of HP was the reason I've stuck with the SP for ~50 years.  Matter of fact I don't like any lead core JHP for game period.  And that includes coyotes.

Deerhunter#1 is correct, Horned list a 87-grain softpoint, product number 2440.   Horned recommends it for varmint and medium game.

I would not be surprised if it will not work in the older 6mm Remington with the 1 in 12" twist barrel.

Hornady says that100-grain bullet #2455 RN will stabilize in the 1 in 12" twist barrels.
Slightly larger bullet, but I have dug a number of .25 caliber Horned round nose out of deer shot by a brother.  Bullet hangs together real good.
