Does Red Dot loose its color?
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:45:51 AM »
I bought an 8lb canister of powder at an auction last summer. The canister was marked red dot. It was old, a cardboard container, but looked like it had been stored well. The powder looks good no rusty looking powder or anything.
Trouble is there are very few red dots in there, way less than I remember in the last can I had. As I study the dots that I can find it looks like they are loosing their color. Several of them have only about half of the flake colored, and that is faded.

I guess I will go ahead and try it in some light pistol loads. My loading books show it loaded in very light charges almost the same as bullseye, so if it isn't as advertised the charges I will be loading will be way underloaded for any other powder.

Yes it does I have some from the early 70's that I bought and know it's RD and the dots are mostly gone a few here and there and faded.

The powder still shoots fine in my shotgun loads.

Thanks Ducks, that eases my mind. I used to use quite a bit of Red Dot for cast bullet pistol loads and it performed pretty well, but I ran out and never replaced it. The canister I bought probably has 6# left in it, That will sling a lot of bullets.

Too bad they don't mark all powders like the Dot powders. I bought a couple other large quantities of powder when I bought the Red Dot. They look like what they are marked but if I ever try to use them I will have to start at rediculously low charges and work up.
One of the powders I bought is in a red metal can about 2-3 gallon size with a crimp on lid like old metal 5 gal paint cans. It is marked 4831. I know the surplus 4831 was sometimes sold in original military containers. Could that be what I have? I shot a lot of it through the years but we never got any in the original containers.

I have same in I think it's 2gal container, I have yet to even brake the band on it, it has a date stamp from the 80's and one that says H4831.

I'm sorry, but every time I see this thread my feeble brain flashes back to my mis-spent youth and I start hearing that old ditty "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?" and I can't make it stop...  :o

Ducks   I currently live in Wyo. I've lived in several western States during my career. I worked on the lower Colo river at one time.
