More wolf attacks in Oregon.

JOSEPH – A recent lull in the Imnaha Pack's stock attacks ended abruptly last week as the wolves injured at least three cattle, one of them a 2-year-old bred heifer that soon required euthanasia.

The depredation cases were discovered Thursday, March 8, on rancher Dave Talbott’s property, about 13 miles east of Joseph.

Wallowa County Commissioner Susan Roberts, who attended the depredation investigation, said Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife investigators confirmed wolf bite injuries to three of Talbott's cattle.

While one of the animals appeared to be on the mend, two others were faring poorly at the time of the investigation. Roberts said one, an 8-year-old cow, had developed a fever but might survive. The third animal, the 2-year old heifer, was euthanized on the recommendation of a veterinarian at the scene.

The veterinarian determined that the heifer's dire state resulted not only from bites and trauma, but as well from “the stress of being run to avoid being eaten,” Roberts said.

The veterinarian also determined that the heifer's unborn calf was already dead. Roberts said the cow was probably within two to three weeks of calving. She added that the veterinarian believed injuries were three to five days old, placing the attacks within a March 3-5 time span.

Roberts said the attacks occurred despite extra measures Talbott had been taking lately to protect his cattle against wolves known to be in the area. Neighbors had been helping, but in the end the wolves got the cattle anyway

The geniuses that decided it would be a good thing to reestablish wolves should have to pay for the dead and injured animals out of their own pockets.

I too agree, the people that are responsible for the wolves being there should pay.  Our Forefathers had a good reason to remove the Wolves from the lower 48.  Just think your kids and grand kids are soon to be on the menu.

Magooch: I agree with that. It's one thing to have them established in a wilderness area, but to have them near established ranch land or cities is a stupid idea.

I live about 70 miles from Joseph, the ranchers are not being paid for the damage from the wolfs YET they do get paid a lot for the grass and hay the Elk ,Deer Turkeys eat part of our tax dollars at work, so I'm sure they will be paid for the wolf's soon.

Wolves don't stay on preserves or parks, they go where the easy food is.  I have a friend that is a Wolf Hunting Guide.  He and his clients kill a bunch of wolves every year.  The National Park Service greenies hate him because he is killing Park Wolves in their openion.  Yet every wolf is shot out on state land, outside the park. 
 
The State Of Alaska, had that problem last year.  The Park Service collered a bunch of wolves inside the Yukon Charley Preserve.  A week later those wolves were shot by our preditor management teams outside the Preserve.  Oh the Park Service and US Fish and Wildlife screamed.  Our Commissioner was not real torn up over it, she said if you don't want them shot keep them at home.  We are shooting more from air planes right now.  Too bad, so sad.  It's not Aerial Hunting, it's Preditor Management.  At $300.00 to $400.00 a pelt for reguler Grays and Blacks, more for Whites and Blues, it's lucrative too.
 
Seems those folks need to learn the three Ss to protect their property and families.  Wolves do kill and eat people if given the chance.  School kids waiting for the buss make tasty morsels.  So do joggers, and dog walkers.  Even an occasional Cross Country Siker.

I haven't heard of any wolves in our area--yet, but we have some pretty big coyotes that are living around and sometimes inside the cities.  Some folks think it is neat to feed them.  A couple of days ago, a coyote was spotted carrying someone's pet mutt off in a residential area.

PETA, Defenders Of Wildlife, Friends Of Animals, they could care less about the animals.  They have proven that many times.  This is a big money making scam for them.  thay are becoming rich off the money they recieve fighting these issues.  Someone got hold of Friends Of Animals financial report a couple of years ago. 

Pricillia Ferrell the President of FOW gets 25% of all donations brought in right off the top.  When she goes somewhere like here to Alaska to attend our Game Board meeting all expenses are paid.  Food, she uses room service since she is afraid to show her face in down town Fairbanks.  Transportation, First Class all the way.  Lodging in a five star hotel, the one the Game Board holds it's meeting in, so she does not have to go outside in the cold hostile environment to attend the meetings.  She has become rich off Friends Of Animals, and pulling the heart strings of little old ladies, and gulliable little girls.

Their Attorneys are also getting rich.  Every time they win in court, all their expenses are reimbursed.  First they have an almost limitless budget to start with from these environmental groups.  They know which judges are likely to side with them, so they get the fight moved to that area, and that judge.  Then when they win, who is to say exactly how many hours they actually spent working on the case, when they apply for reimbursement.  They are also becoming rich off these cases.

It's about the money and getting rich.  Jammie Rappaport Clark the head of Defenders Of Wildlife, just retired from that job.  She also is a retired head of US Fish and Wildlife Service.  The first job for the Federal Government set her up[ for a comfortable retirement, but the second one with Defenders made her rich.  They (Defenders) send out e-mailings every week, asking for money to save something.  This week it is Bison off Yellowstone.  They are asking for money to move the Bison to a new home on the plains.  It's either Polar Bears, (who are not endangered) Wolves, Seals, Otters, Bison, Grizzlies, Eagles, or Turtles.  Anything they can use to pull the heart strings of little old ladies, who send in a few dollars each.  It all adds up.

PETA etc just use animals as a resource to be exploited, without regard to animal welfare. I remember the prairie dog campaign that tried to get all prairie dogs listed as endangered even though they are plentiful and only one specie in Utah was endangered at the time. That killed millions of prairie dogs. The ranchers used the SSS principle to exterminate PDs widely using poison. Didn't want an endangered specie on their land.
 
No amount of shooting could do that much damage in so short a time.
