7mm Dakota
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:10:51 PM »
Thinking of rechambering my 26" barreled 280 Remington to 7mm Dakota. Any thoughts? Will the gun handle the pressure? Anyone know of a good 'smith that would do such work? I had a 300 Dakota some years back and really like their cartridges. Thanks, Tom

Hi,

Do a web search for  "steve's pages" and look at the cartridge drawings for the 280 Rem and 7 dakota.  I just glanced at the drawings for these two cartridges and the shoulder and OAL for the 7 dakota are shorter than the 280 Rem which means you would need to set back the barrel to do this rechamber, which is not so easy on a break action gun.  I didn't look up the pressure for the 7 dakota but but it has a larger case head than the 280 rem so breech thrust would be something else to consider.   Also, if you click on the banner for 4D reamer rentals you can send Fred a message and ask his thoughts on this rechamber.  Fred is very good about responding to our questions.

The 7mm Dakota is a magnum chambering which isn't for use on an H&R, max pressure runs at 59465psi(140gr bullets @3500fps), with the large .545" case head, that's well over 13k lbs breech thrust, about 2k more than the 270Win or 500S&W which are the highest pressure H&R factory chamberings. I've worked with a 300WSM barrel on a Handi, I couldn't get 30-06 velocities without action flex due to the breech thrust of the big case. Best advice is rechamber to 280 Improved, I have one, it works fine, does require fire forming first tho, you won't be able to form factory 280 ammo because the barrel can't be set back as on a threaded barrel, see handloading for an improved chambering in the FAQs.  ;)

Thanks all...guess I'll leave it as is and work up some loads. Just bought a 35 Whelen today so I'm eager to start playing with that.
