The American - Single Digit Serial Number
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:23:48 PM »
I recently acquired this solid frame revolver which appears to have a single digit serial number.  From what I have read, if I am deciphering correctly, this version is the first model, third variation with the octagon barrel and nickel trigger guard (1888-1897).  Given that, did H&R start the serial numbers over with each variation?  Or what exactly have I got?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

History Fan,
Sorry for the delay, I've been medically unavailable for a couple weeks.
Your ID sounds right on to me.  Very nice specimen by the way.  Flat recoil shield and flat (flush) hammer screw are characteristics of the variation and Nickel trigger guard is pre 1897-98.
IT APPEARS - that H&R ran batches of these older guns (as did other manufacturers) up to a certain number then started over - current consensus (amongst just a few of us collectors) is that H&R probably ran up to 9999 then started over.  I've seen a few with one digit, more with two and a bunch with three, and more with four.  Yours could be the 4th example made - but more likely 4th in some unknown batch.  No way to know at this late date.

I hope you're doing better Jim, let me know if there's anything I can do.
