Ink Cap Mushrooms
« on: March 23, 2012, 03:36:11 PM »
Anyone ever pick these? I picked some this morning for the first time, and brought a handful home and fried a few in butter. I was out looking for Morels, and had my mushroom book with me. I found what was Ink Caps in one of my Morel spots. I will definetly be picking more of these tasty little shrooms.

Blind Ear I would be glad to help you out if I lived a little closer. I'm up in S.W. Pennsylvania. The book I have is called "field guide to wild mushrooms of pennsylvania and the mid atlantic" Author is Bill Russell.

Maybe try one of these books in this link.

So far the mushrooms I have found I have found on my own. I have only hunted Morels, Sheepheads, and now Inky Caps. These are relatively easy to identify. I do have a few friends with a good bit of experience, but they live near my camp about 1.5 hrs away. Cell phone cameras come in real handy if you have service were your hunting. I have sent my buddy a picture of a shroom I was unsure of and had a response back while I was still standing over the patch of mushrooms.

I will help you out if I can but I am far from an expert, and still learning every time I go out.

I went out in the back yard the other day and found a nice patch of ink caps. I picked about 30-40 of the little shrooms before I cut the grass. I fried them up in butter and tossed them in some eggs for breakfast.

You can definitely eat the kind of mushrooms I can identify. And you'll be a much happier person for it--- for several hours. You might even have a really good conversation with a tree.  ;)

Yes, but would you want your children and grandchildren to join you in the meal? ear

I haven't tried those inky caps, but have tried shaggy mane's that grow here in Wisconsin in September. Very good with lots of flavor, but very fragile also.

Are you finding morels by you yet?  With the early spring they have been gone for a month here.  Had a decent season for them, picked about 8 lbs. Usually have enough to dry, but the kids ate them up pretty quickly this year.

Be careful with your mushroom ID by phone, there are several things you should look at for IDing, and many self proclaimed mushroom experts have ended up dead by eating "safe" shrooms...
