Recently bought this rifle. However I do not see the Mark X. Did    Alexander Virginia Interarms Manchester England make some of these that were not a Mark X?? Paid $175 and is in very good condition but not sure what year this is.

It should be 80's to early 90's. Great firearm! Enjoy!

Hi,

Interarms, Alexandria, VA, is not a manufacturer of firearms.  They are an importer, who imported huge numbers of surplus and new firearms in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.   Their headquarters is/was on a busy street corner in downtown Old Town Alexandria, about 5 miles from my childhood home.

The new bolt action rifles they imported were high quality mausers, made in what was then (I believe) Yugoslavia, by (I think) the Zastava factory.  (I could be wrong on this, and invite correction.)  Check all of the markings on your rifle.  The name of the manufacturer or its symbol should be stamped on it.

The top of the line mausers, with the very nicest walnut stocks, were called the Mark X for years and years.  I think that later, in the 1980s or so, they started importing basically the same rifle, with slightly less polishing, and cheaper grade walnut stocks, with various names such as the Viscount or the Cavalier.

The vast majority of all of these commercial mausers were in .30-06 and .270.   Fairly common was the 7 mag.  Almost impossible to find one in .308 Winchester.

Again, though, they were very high quality mausers compared to what you see today.  They generally go for $350 to $450 at gunshows, and are often used as the basis for custom rifles.

I never liked the factory safety, or the trigger.  Most folks replace them with a Timney adjustable trigger with the side safety.

  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate that. Fellow I bought it from says he got it as a gift new in 1975. Would this explain why it does not say Mark X?? No name on it at all. But there are the 3 stamps. On the right side of action on coupling to barrell then just past that on barrell. Would be nice to know what these stamps are and what they mean. I'll see if I can send a picture.
