money pit wheel restoration
« on: April 15, 2012, 11:04:41 PM »
Buddy gave me some alumiun spoked jeep wheels that needed refinishing. ive got slotted aluminum ones on know that the road salt has worked there majic on them so i figured it would be a cheap way to replace them. Little did i know. It cost me a 150 bucks for primer, paint and clear coat. You have to use special wheel paint thats 10 bucks a can, even the primer. Then i bought 25 bucks worth of blasting sand. the sand was having a hard time cutting the old paint and clear coat so we burned it off with a rose bud. Well the buddys tanks went dry so we went to fill them and i told him it was on me. I about crapped when the bill was a 120 bucks to fill his ox and act. tanks. So ive got near 300 bucks into this and thats not even including the labor. Got them all blasted yesterday and it was a job! I could have bought a new set of rims for what this cost me  ::)

I have a 2005 Z-71 and the wheels look terrible.  I live at the coast in a salt environment, and I drive on the beach as well.  You have given me a new idea.  Maybe I can have my rims sand blasted and powder coated, or just left unpainted.  Anything would look better than now.  It doesn't worry me much.  A tire and wheel have to live in the dirt and shouldn't be expected to look new.  Never understood the logic of whitewall tires either.

they wont last long unpainted in a salt enviroment. If you sand blast them and dont mind how they look just buy some clear coat and at least clear coat them. Powder coating is a good option if you really like the design but again like i found out for the money invested in blasting and coating or even painting you can probably buy a set of cheaper alloy rims new. I put american racing alloys on my silverado when it was new in 06 and there in pretty sad shape too but after this ill either run them or buy new ones. Probablly just run them until they start leaking are through the metal like the rims on my old dakota did.

Not in the market for new rims.  Like you, I think I'll run them as long as possible.  At 65, I plan to make this truck last a long time.  I've probably got one more truck in my future but maybe not.
