The only reason cancer is common, is because we now live long enough to get it.  In 1900 the average life expectancy was about 35.  They died of other causes before cancer got them.

I think life expectancy in US then was higher, if you didn't figure in childhood death/disease. Those who made it past those stood a good chance of making it into their sixties, often beyond.
