Buying bulk black powder
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:17:03 PM »
Friend just bought a cannon and asked where he could order black powder from. One local shop here in N. Calf will only sell 1lb at a time. He's looking to buy 25lbs. He understands the hazmat charge ETC... Somebody suggested Track of the wolf, is there any others where it can be bought in bulk?

Go to the Cannon link list in the stickys at the top of the forum and look for the powder suppliers.

A very popular one is  Powder inc. At first their prices look high until you realize thejr  prices include shipping and haz mat fee.

You can also  look at the GOEX distributors lost and contact those people about getting powder.  There is a distributor in El Monte.

If the seller will only do one can at a time, you might want to check local laws to see if there is a restriction on how much you to can have at once or storage laws.

Jack's  in Louisiana usually has pretty good case prices, I've bought mine there for several years. It's under Jack's Powder Keg , prices include shipping.

Here on the Best Coast, you might try "The Gun Works" Muzzleloading Emporium in Springfield, Or. Sells more than a pound at a time...you can find them on line. BoomLover

I've bought my last several 25 lb cases from Coonie's Explosives and Black Powder in Hobbs, New Mexico.  Apparently no website but they do have an email address:  cooniesblkpdr@aol.com

You can send a PM to MichaelFreeland (one of our members).  He owns a fireworks business and has bulk black powder that was good enough for Matt Switlik to buy recently.  I plan to get it from him next time I'm running low.

I bought mine from a Goex dealer near Scranton PA. They explained I didn't need to come in and pick it up, they could ship up to 25lbs via UPS. UPS is restricted to a certain amount per truck.

I don't think UPS will ship it unless it is in "cans".

My black powder shooting club orders (25) 1# cans per order.  I had to get them to include my cannon grade as they normally order FFg - FFFFg grades.

Someone really should provide the Fa and Fg sieve specifications and have them in the sticky's so folks can reference them once in a while.  Also publishing the chemical formulations and their densities is good information too.  I've read some posts on the board that were pretty inaccurate in trying to relate Fa (fireworks/blasting) grade powder with the Fg Sporting Powder.

4Fa is fairly equivalent to Fg.  2Fa is pretty close to Cannon Grade Fg.  If I had a scanner I'd scan the sheets and post them.  Sorry... maybe in the future sometime.
