Tire Update
« on: May 10, 2004, 09:01:59 AM »
Well I mentioned on the "Which Tires Are Better" topic that I had my new tires put on my '02 Dakota Quad Cab SLT 4x4. I went with Dunlop Radial Rover RT 265/75R16. The truck came Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 265/70R16. I needed a tire that was better in the mud then the Goodyear's. The Dunlop tires are "night and day" better in the mud. They have a stiffer sidewall so I don't get anymore sidewall rubbing when I turn. I recommend these tires to anyone that needs a tire that is pretty good in the mud and still rides good on the highway to. There not "full blown mud tires" but there a lot better then most factory tires!!!

NY Hunter,
Have you re-calibrated your speedometer yet????  Now that you have on a different aspect ratio it could result in serious error in the speedometer readout.  I would get out the stop-watch and start checking those mile markers on Rt. 81, 481, 690.

I don't know how to re-calibrate the speedometer.

The new tires are about one inch taller then stock. I talked to a guy that put the same size tires on his Dakota and he said it read 58 MPH when he was going 60 MPH. That doesn't seem to bad. The dealer told me I had to keep the tire size with in 10% of the factory size for the speedo and anti lock brakes to work right. What do you think :?:
I bought a '94 F150 extended 4x4 off my parents in '99. When they bought it in '96 it had 31x10.5R15 on it. Just before I bought it my dad put the factory size 235/75R15 tires on it. I wish he left the bigger tires on it but you can't argue with five brand new tires either. On that truck the smaller tires worked a lot better then the bigger ones. The truck had the 5.0L engine which wasn't enough engine for a truck that big to begin with. It also had 3.31 rear gears which needed the smaller tires. The truck seemed more responsive. My Dakota has 3.55 rear gears and the 4.7L (230 HP & 290 FT LBS of Torque) engine which is a lot more powerful then the 5.0L (180 HP & 240 or 250 FT. LBS. of torque) in the ford and the Dakota is a lot lighter. I can't tell the difference between the two tire sizes I've had on my truck.
