Trimming 45-70 Brass?
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:01:11 AM »
Not being a bottleneck case can I reload for the 45-70 ...mild to mid level loads.....without worrying about the need  to trim  cases?

As long as cases are under Max O.A.L. and you are not crimping there should be no problem.  If cases become too long and exceed Max length they could possibly jam into the leade and cause excess pressures.

The 45-70 cases grow slowly and I usually trim all cases before loading the first  time just so they will be the same initial length.  This is also an advantage if you decide to crimp a bullet.

The little Lee trimmers are cheap and work great/easy.

+1 even middle of the road loads in my .45-70 will slowly grow brass.  Barnburners have increased its length by up to 1/16" at one firing.  Lee trimmers work great.

A 6 in digital caliper works well for this. They can be found at Sears, Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Midway, just about anywhere. Prices range from $20.00 for an import to over a hundred for a Starrett.

Check out item #290658897402 on fleabay.  I bought a caliper identical to this one about five years ago.  It has performed flawlessly; replaced the battery once.  Dang right I'm cheap; but I'm also practical.  +1 on the Lee case trimmer;  it comes with everything you need to measure and trim the casing.  If you have a drill press, you can really be in business for trimming.

Yep- it will make cases longer. in my time I had a 45-70 Ruger #3 that I loaded hot (My shoulders were a lot more flexy then!) and the case stretched and also did no do it squarely. The were up to 100 thou. longer on one side so I had to trim them down to the shortest side. I use a Wilson Trimmer (THE BEST THERE IS) but maybe the slowest. Anyway once I trimmed them It was seldom I had to do it again no matter what loads I used from the Hornady Book. Mine was a SS so any repeater would need more attention-Muddy

You can also get a universal case length guage from any reloading supplier, that will usually cover 15 or so calibers...
