22mag question
« on: April 04, 2012, 05:06:29 AM »
I was checking out a new gun shop in my area over the weekend and they had a few Handi-rifles ,one that caught my eye was a 22 Mag, used but looked like new. Did they make an ultra in these? I ask because it had a checkered laminated stock on it , I have been thinking about going back and bringing it home with me  :)  the price was $180 plus tax, is that a fair price for a 22 Mag ??
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. Psalm 118:8 (center of the bible)

Handi-List
 204Ruger, 223Rem, 243Win, 30-30Win,450 Marlin, 44Mag, 357Max, 357Mag, 45-70, 20ga Partner, 20ga shorty.

I bought one a few years back new for $149. I'd probably pay the $180 for that one if it's like new. I used to shoot quarters with mine at 100yds. so they shoot pretty good. ;)

I say go for it, but I would try and get it for $180 out the door. Most of the gun shops I visit will take care of tax on used guns if you ask.

If you decided you didnt like it you could always part it out in the for sale forum and make your money back, maybe even a little more. I know Ive been looking for the barrel off of one of those for some time and those stocks never seem to last long.

Yep, mine is like that, a factory Ultra Varmint that they called a 'bull barrel, but it isnt really, its a heavy barrel with a slight taper. It has stayed while other 22 Mags have gone (including one custom built, high buck Win. Low Wall with a Win Mdl 52 barrel). It took a couple of hundred rounds to really settle down. I paid $160 back then, so $180 isnt bad for now. If you pass on it just TRY to find another one!
BTW, I was able to fit a Sportster barrel from a member here fairly easily, so it wears open sights while the Mag is scoped; and CR carbine wood. That UV stockset works great on any CF H&R rifle. I guess what Im saying is you will set the stage for some 'custom' rifles on the cheap.
