Well, the Communists back in the 50's said the only way they could conquer America was:

1) Take over one of the political parties.
2) Take over the entertainment industry.
3) Take over the press.
4) Take over the education systems.
5) Encourage sex, alcohol, and drugs among teens to loose their morals.
6) Breakdown the family.
7) Encourage class warfare.

They were told to go to school to get degrees in education, journalism, drama, law, and encourage alternative lifestyles.  Looks like they succeeded.

Here is an article from "Real Clear Politics" about the so called loss of the middle class.

http://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2012/03/08/the_misleading_tale_of_income_inequality_99555.html

The problem is lots of single parent families and singles who do not have the "combined income" to accumulate wealth that a married couple can have. There is no real difference in incomes from the mid-80's until now, just more single heads of households with less household income.  I was told when I was young that two can live cheaper than one.  Lot's of truth to that.  Two people earning $10 and hour each can live cheaper by having only one set of bills.  Kid's getting married later, more people living single, or even if they "live together", they keep their expenses seperate and are more selfish about their spending, (more for themselves and what they want to do).  The breakdown of family as encouraged by the way the Feds administer welfare and food stamp help, Holywood's lifestyles that they show and encourage, free sex, rampant drug use, liberal press, liberal lawyers and judges, and the loss of the Democratic party to the far left loonies.  There is no such thing as a conservative Democrat anymore, they all switched to Republican back in the 80's and 90's.

Well back to preparedness, we must prep, because hyper inflation is coming, and the bankrupcy of the Federal government.  The Yellowstone area has risen 3" a year the last three years and has had over 200 minor earthquakes around it.  The New Madrid fault is overdue for a quake.  God can lift a finger and rain havoc on the US and those not prepared like Joseph.

Breakdown of family?

ironically enough, those preppers are violating new federal laws.. its now , has been in some places for awhile to "stockpile" and "collect and hoard" supplies. which those prep shows highlight.  how many of those preppers will get rounded up, items confiscated by the local officials if a natural or man made disaster "happens" in thier area ? i dunno.
i would not suggest advertizing  on a nation wide tv series with my plans , how i do things and my area... in any light.

Most of them act like idiots.  They just make the rest of us look like fools.

Not only do they act and sounds like fools, they are surely setting themselves up to be raided by some government agencies or para military unit working on the feds behalf. and maybe they will get attacked by zombies, canabils or roving bands of ppl that saw  them on tv before the disaster happened .. that now want what these ppl have,  the things these fools stocked up and advertised on cable tv ...

The only thing I walke daway with from the show was the guy in Arizona who converted his swimming pool into a miniature ecosystem.  Tilapia fish as a sustainable food source is very clever, with the runoff from previous phases of his "ecosystem" that provides food to the fish.   He said he has to go fishing everyday to maintain the population.   Sustenance and sanity [remember Will Smith in I Am Legend fishing in the reflection pool?].....two goals accomplished with one preparation.

Repete its only a show , its only a show , its only a show .................
My grandparents canned their own food or salted or smoked it. My parents got some of all becaused they helped . As I got older and the grandparents got to old to do all the work and the family had spread out I got canned goods from the store. Not as tasty but still easy to have on hand. Its food we use anyway we just buy in advance not the day we need it. Guns and ammo, we shoot and hunt so we have what we need with out calling it preping. Clothes well we hunt and camp we have sturdy clothes . We have a 4WD truck for farm use and hunting. We have a wood stove ( we spend a week or two each year with out electricty due to storms) . We now raise and can veggies and will try deer this year. We raise cows for resale ( 5-6 at a time)

The shows show the extreme , better to live a life that uses the items you would depend on in an emg. Survival food and tools are not wine they don't get better with time , if you have to wipe the dust off you might find your stash comprised . THAT WOULD MAKE ONE LOOK LIKE A FOOL AND FEEL LIKE AN IDOIT  ;)

And that's my point...They make us look like fools.  It doesn't have to be inbread rednecks living in a buried double wide.

Being prepared is normal, it should look normal.  Can't they find any normal people?

Some of the people were more sensable than others.  Also having a years supply of food isn't bad, and having a couple years supply of non-hybrid seeds.

Heirloom seeds can be had in sealed tins for long term storage. Hybrid seed will last several years if stored correctly. The thing is each year of storage about 10% will not come up . Also if seed from hybrid seed is planted you often get something.

I have an unopened package of seeds from 1947.  I so want to open them and see if they come up.  They were my wifes grandmother's and she would prefer I didn't.

That would be a good experiment. My grandfather was a seed tester , the seed producers sent him seed to try then would visit from time to time to see how it worked . He also had seed he had kept and used from year to year . My uncle threw it all away when they cleanned out after my grandfather passed away . I wish that had not happened.

The hippie segment struck me as a story about a group of left-wing-sixties-throwback-pacifists with a gun...emphasis on a gun.

That old bolt action isn't going to get the group very far if SHTF and a group of marauders comes knocking.

Good thing they have a nice set of heavy blast doors that they can lock up.
