Handi forearm problem
« on: March 29, 2012, 03:44:07 AM »
Just got a new Handi with wood stock, and the forearm screw hole is off a little making the forearm hard to get on and off due to the lug rubbing on the edge of the hole. This cant be good for accuracy I'm guessing, so I'm think I should slot out the hole enough for the lug to clear.  Any ideas? Should I slot it out or leave it? Anything I need to know before I do it? I'm thinking I'll use a round file and slowly slot the hole as needed.  What say you?

If it opens tight, I would take wood off the back of the forend, under the spacer.

It opens ok, it's when trying to remove the forearm from the barrel that i have the trouble.

Exactly as mentioned take the spacer off and a little at a time remove some wood. One thing of note if you get another barrel on this receiver it may fit totaly different and might even be to loose so you might need another forearm. This is one reason I like dedicated guns.

I never touch the wood, just the spacer, it's a lot easier to flat sand it than keep the end of the forend square, and the spacer costs a lot less to replace, see FOREND FIT in the FAQs.  ;)

How does that forearm fit on other Handis? sometimes better fit can be accomplished merely by swapping out the spacer with one from another stock. However, I may be going against the grain here but I have done a bit of stock work on Handis and after looking at the picture I believe your first impression of just a LITTLE judiciuos work with a small round file in the existing hole would work and not harm any future uses of the stock...good luck and let us know how this works out....<><.... :)

I'd leave it like it is for now. You are not changing any bbl's with it at this point as you got just the one. It may loosen up some on it's own. If you are tearing it down to clean you can just clean it put together and then every few time take the forarm off to deep clean. Kurt

Your fore end stud is probably off center (not uncommon); sometimes just a tad of oblonging the hole to the offending side will help, but the chamfer for the head of the screw will still be off. Get it worked over until, with a longer screw, it lets the forearm assemble and function right, and consider if you need to relieve the chamfer too and/or epoxy (bed) the now loose side a bit.
Another approach is to glue skewer sticks in the forearm spacer holes and re-drill/fit it from the frame contact to forearm.
With this bit of work in mind, you might want to check out the 'pillar bedding' some have done, with great success IIRC.

I agree with Tim. Its far easier to adjust the spacer for proper fit than to move the hole...

BUT If you had to move it here is what I would do:

Bore out the hole with say a 7/8 or 1" hole. Epoxy in a piece of hard wood, re-cut the barrel channel. Then the outter surfaces and re-drill the hole in the proper place. Just like you would to fix a stripped out recoil pad hole only a bit bigger.

Maybe I didnt get it......
But isnt his issue NOT that it is too hard to open because of too much forearm/spacer pressure against the frame, but that the barrel lug is bearing down to one side of the screw /lug hole and putting side pressure on the forearm, which also cocks the spacer against the frame and creates uneven pressure there.
CW, your solution is a good one, but I would try the lessor 'relieving' and work up to that if needed. It would be a good learning curve to do it incrementally.

How does the gun shoot? If the hole is off to one side or the other than sanding the spacer will only work for moving the forarm to rear and not side ways. If the gun shoots good than I would leave it be, if not and the hole needs to move to the side than use the round file re-bevel for the screw head and epoxy if needed.

Mine was binding hard at the spacer, and forcing the forend to one side. You can check if the forend is paralel to the barrel by just removing the spacer, and see if it strightens out. That's why I sanded the back of the forend, and it strightened mine right out. I should have just sanded the spacer itself like Tim and longshot said.
